Full-Time Transit Systems Electronics Technician II – $21.63-$40.87/hour – TRANS002192

Job Description

Salary range is $21.63/hour to $40.86/hour, with a midpoint of $31.25/hour.  New hires typically receive between minimum and midpoint, however, we may go slightly higher based on experience, internal equity and market.

Under minimal supervision, performs preventative and basic corrective maintenance along with other required tasks on electronic devices associated with systems such as Security (Camera, Emergency Phones), Fare Collection (Ticket Vending Machines, Smart Card Readers), Heavy Rail Train (Security Systems, Wi-Fi, Automated Passenger Counters), Passenger Information (Variable Message Signs, Public Address), and others. The equipment is located at heavy rail and light rail stations and transit centers throughout the region. Frequent driving and local travel is required.

The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Performs preventive and basic corrective maintenance on Transit Systems electronic and electro-mechanical devices such as cameras, SIP devices, infrared counters, digital signage, smart card readers, coin and bill validators, credit card readers, PIN pads, networking devices, data processors, thermal printers, touch screens, and power supplies.
  • Ensure fare media stock is available for passenger use.
  • Basic systems troubleshooting and escalation of required repair work.
  • Evaluates the functionality and condition of field equipment. Corrects minor vandalism, replaces decals and other cleaning needs to ensure visual quality assurance standards are met on equipment.
  • Utilizes software and other tools to assist with problem analysis for maintenance and configuration of equipment.
  • Uses hand tools, power tools, and specialized system specific diagnostic equipment.
  • Utilizes test instruments to ensure compliance with manufacturer requirements.
  • Identify necessary tools and supplies to carry out duties and ensure operational needs are met.
  • Maintains records associated with tracking the preventative maintenance of systems. Creates and updates records of system’s performance, daily work activities, asset movement, and related information.
  • Enters data into asset management system and ensures accuracy of data in accordance with Sound Transit requirements. Conducts regular auditing within asset management program as required.
  • Maintains quality assurance and control standards on systems.
  • Demonstrates continuous awareness to improve day to day operations, decrease response times, streamline work processes, improve systems performance, and work collaboratively with a sense of urgency to provide quality customer service to internal and external entities.
  • Escorts vendors and provides access assistance for others performing work at Sound Transit properties.
  • Assists engineering and installation teams with installing new equipment.
  • Consistently demonstrates Agency core values in all interactions.
  • Adheres to team operational performance standards and complies with policies and procedures in the performance of assigned work.

  • Provides support to the department on matters as directed.

Education and Experience: High School Diploma/GED and graduation from technical/trade school in electronics or electronic communication systems, or closely related field, and one year of experience performing installation, maintenance, and repair work of electronic or electro-mechanical devices; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid state driver’s license.

Required Knowledge of:

  • Electronic theory, practice, and electrical safety.
  • Digital, analog, and electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • The use of electronic test equipment.
  • Basic troubleshooting methods.
  • Cable distribution, cable termination, and basic principles of electricity.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Basic networking principals.

Required Skill in:

  • Safe use of hand and power tools.
  • Principles of business letter writing and report preparation.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with department staff, management, vendors, outside agencies, community groups, and the public. Diagnosing problems or malfunctions and accomplishing tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Comprehending and making inferences from material written in the English language and understanding and following complex schematics, circuit diagrams, service requests, worksheets, floor plans, electrical wiring plans, construction blueprints and related documents.
  • Making skillful controlled manipulations of small objects such as wiring, tools and equipment components.
  • Learning job related material through oral instruction, observation, structured lecture, and reading.
  • Working under pressure, handling significant problems or tasks, which come up simultaneously or unexpectedly.
  • Effectively engaging in difficult conversations when working collaboratively with other departments, Agency officials, passengers and outside agencies.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily in field locations such as train station platforms, transit centers and heavy rail vehicles.
  • Working in small cramped areas, such as equipment enclosures.
  • Safe use of aerial lift equipment and ladders for elevated repair work.
  • Weekend work may be required.
  • Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harms, and extreme noise when conducting site visits and when working in the field. May be required to use equipment to manipulate Sound Transit assets that weigh up to 1000 pounds.
  • Must be able to work effectively while both working alone and in a team environment.
