Part-Time Temporary Part-time Environmental Educator

Job Description

The Eno River Association’s mission is to conserve and protect the natural, historical, and cultural resources of the Eno River Basin. In order to achieve this mission, we aim to create opportunities for our community to connect to the Eno through our education programming and outreach events. When our community knows and understands the complexities and wonders of nature and history, they grow a passion for this place and become better stewards of the river and surrounding land. We are seeking a temporary part-time environmental educator to help us to achieve our mission. This part-time temporary environmental educator will assist with the development and facilitation of educational programming, including school outreach, field trips, public programs, and occasional educational community events.

 

This position is temporary and the expected end date is June 30, 2022.

 

Compensation: $16/hour, average of 15 hours per week

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Work directly with the Director of Education & Outreach and the AmeriCorps Environmental Educator in developing, facilitating, and supporting education programming of the Eno River Association
  • Research, plan, and develop scheduled educational programs and field trips for K-12 students in Durham and Orange counties
  • Programs cover a wide range of topics including but not limited to watershed and river systems, water quality, ecology, wildlife, natural history, and cultural history
  • Maintain positive relationships with Durham and Orange county public school teachers and administrators, community partners, and Eno River Association staff and Board
  • Assist with planning and execution of Eno community events and programs; these events may require work on evenings, weekends, and a few holidays
  • Assist with production of educational materials, including activity guides, worksheets, visual aids, etc. Potentially support the production of video and audio education materials.
  • Shares responsibility with other Eno education staff for the care and maintenance of program materials and equipment
  • Opportunities for contributions to Association social media, monthly Enews, and biannual newsletter

 

Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License, and able to drive a pickup truck and panel van (automatic transmission).
  • Capable with Microsoft Word and Excel. Basic understanding of Social Media.
  • Able to hike up to 5 miles on rugged trails while conducting interpretation and education
  • programming. Able to wade in a flowing river with a rocky, uneven bottom.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds for at least 200 yards.
  • Tolerance for working outdoors in typical North Carolina weather ranging from hot and humid, to cold and wet and sometimes frozen.

 

The ideal candidate:

  • Has at least one year of experience teaching or working with children in a field-based or in-school environment
  • Enjoys working with children
  • Enjoys working in the outdoors and has an affinity for nature and conservation
  • Comfortable presenting information to diverse audiences, ranging from 5-100 people
  • Has substantial knowledge of natural resources, systems, and concepts
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Maintains a positive attitude and is a team player
  • Experience with video/audio recording, editing, publishing a plus!
  • Spanish language skills are a plus!

 

Typical working schedule:

  • Because the position is for in-school programming, the majority of the work will be fulfilled Monday through Friday
  • Some weekend and/or evening work may be required for programs and events

 

Ideal start date November 1, 2022
