Nearly 50% of BSU’s total undergraduate enrollment is comprised of transfer students from a wide array of educational backgrounds. The Transfer Services team at BSU strives to support the transitional needs of all prospective transfers and matriculated transfer students through our student-centered approach. As evidenced by the creation of Transfer Central, we value the diverse body of transfer student populations we serve and offer them a centralized hub where they can meet with transfer-support representatives and receive the knowledge and support needed to become successful members of the BSU community.

Position Summary:

Under the leadership of the Director of Transfer Services, the Transfer Advisor will strive to create relationships that foster a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable culture for racially and socioeconomically diverse transfer student populations looking to attend Bridgewater State University. In this role, the Transfer Advisor will serve as a transfer advocate with the goal of supporting the holistic learning needs of transfer students during both the pre- and post-admission phases of the onboarding process. The Transfer Advisor will serve as a campus liaison and point of contact for prospective community college students who will assist students in proactively preparing for their transition to BSU. The Transfer Advisor will educate students on academic curriculum options, transferability of courses, and benefits associated with specific DHE programs. Moreover, the Transfer Advisor will help inform students on the processes involved with the transition to BSU and implement student engagement practices that support persistence and retention. This position will focus on the diverse needs of all students including: African American/Black, Latinx, White, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, Multiracial and first-generation college students. These efforts support the overall success of our transfer student population.

Transfer Services is one of five departments located within the Academic Achievement Center (AAC). Other AAC departments include: Academic Advising, Learning Assistance, Student Accessibility Services, and Testing Services. We dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.

This position is located on campus in Bridgewater, MA and requires extensive local travel. Opportunities for some remote work may be available in accordance with BSU telecommuting policies.

Essential Duties:

• Provides comprehensive and consistent on-site and virtual advising to diverse populations of students attending community colleges in the Commonwealth, as well as other regional two-year institutions, requiring approximately 70% travel.

• Coordinates collaborative opportunities between BSU faculty/resources and community college staff, faculty, and students.

• Collaborates with BSU faculty and Marketing & Communications to create advising resources to be shared with community college staff, faculty, and students.

• Use inclusive practices to facilitate transfer programs and events at identified community colleges that focus on the transitional needs of prospective and/or recently admitted BSU students.

• Serve as a transfer resource and participate in prospective student advising activities, CC2BSU functions, Transfer Tuesday’s, and other closely related programs.

• Maintain a network of contacts at regional feeder institutions and develop a system of coordinating regular meetings between transfer counterparts at each community college and BSU representatives.

• Contribute to department and university initiatives that impact student persistence, retention, diversity and inclusion.

• Support all prospective and newly admitted student transfers via degree planning to reinforce the student’s educational and career goals; guide student-comprehension of BEARS database/course equivalencies, transfer agreements, MassTransfer benefits, appeal processes, registration, and DegreeWorks navigation.

• Assist the Director of Transfer Services in the exploration and development of new transfer initiatives with regional community colleges, as well as articulation agreements.

• Identify equity gaps relevant to the transfer experience and collaborate with campus partners to develop effective solutions that improve the student experience.

• Use equity-oriented practices to assess meaningful transfer data, prepare reports, and monitor the needs of the transfer population, recommending new initiatives that encourage involvement and empower learning amongst transfer students.

• Participate on committees and task forces where appropriate and when time and interest permit.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree.

• Experience working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds and across all identities and demographics.

• Three years of related experience, especially in the areas of academic advising, admissions, academic support services, and/or college instruction.

• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing, and with a diverse student body, faculty, administrators, and staff.Ability to effectively use technological solutions in the delivery of academic advising services.Experience advancing the cause of racial and social justice via implementing equitable services that serve underrepresented populations.

• Strong ability to work closely and confidentially with students, faculty, and administrators to exercise sound judgment and to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.

• Commitment to customer service excellence and responsiveness to student concerns that helps promote an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

• Must be able to travel to regional community colleges on a weekly basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of DegreeWorks and Banner systems.2. Understanding of MassTransfer Pathway programs, Commonwealth Commitment, and their associated benefits.3. Language proficiency in Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, and/or French.
