Our department produces 3 faculty directed shows each season, including one musical, and 2 student directed and designed shows.

Position Summary:

The Theatre Technical Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and completion of all scenic activities (scenery construction & installation, painting, and props) for departmental productions through producing working drawings, determining the production expenses of projects given the designer drawings, the number of student workers available and their level of skill, and the time frame for completion, negotiating alternatives with the director and scenic designer, establishing the construction calendar, overseeing and managing the scenic budget, and coordinating shop and stage activities with other staff and faculty positions.

This is a 10-month position, salary is paid over a 12 month period.

This position is an exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

Essential Duties:

• Help to assure an effective approach to departmental productions by coordinating, building, and implementing all scenic activities for the departmental production season, ensuring that all production schedule deadlines are met.

• Assist in moving from design to construction by producing working drawings for scenic construction of designs submitted by resident, student, and visiting designers, determining whether the designer drawings can be executed given the budget, time frame, and the number and the skill levels of student workers, negotiating with the director and scenic designer on alternatives, and preparing the construction calendar.

• Provide a comprehensive learning experience for student employees by assessing skill levels and overseeing the instruction of the technical aspects and safety procedures involved in scenic construction.

• Facilitate the movement of scenic elements by configuring and affecting the relationship of scenic elements to be shifted manually or mechanically and calculating the movement patterns for design efficiency and safety. Collaborates with University Events in securing materials and installing rigging and flying elements.

• Manage and maintain all theatre department prop and scenery inventory and storage facilities.

• Attendance at regularly scheduled production meetings, evening and weekend availability required as needed in support of Load ins, Technical Rehearsals, Performances, and Strikes.

• Assure the efficient operation of the shop by overseeing human and material resources.

• Collaborate with University Eventsto promote preventive maintenance, preservation, and cleaning of scenery shop tools and equipment.

• Play an active role in the education of students by working with faculty to support the practical scene shop element of the Stagecraft class.

• Provide scenic construction support for Department of Dance productions as needs and workload allow, and in consultation with direct supervisor.

• Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses and/or conferences, and attending training and/or courses required by the supervisor.

• Remain competent and current in backstage and scene shop safety best practices.

• Maintain fiscal responsibility for holding a University Procurement Card and managing small supply budgets.

• Help to ensure the overall success of the Department of Theatre by performing all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or a related field.

• At least two years of practical work experience in technical production on the university or professional level.

• Ability to communicate appropriately and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and community partners

• Supervisory skills.

• Mechanical skills in the use of hand and power tools.

• The ability to read and understand floor plans, design sketches, construction plans, and the ability to produce working drawings are required.

• Ability to build scenery from working drawings.

• Commitment to customer service excellence and collegial support in order to enhance an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

• The ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds daily.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Theatre design/technology education.

• Scenic painting and welding experience.
