The Savanna Institute invites applications for our Spring Green Field crew. We seek applicants who share our passion for ecological agriculture.  All qualified applicants are welcome; farmers and members of under-represented groups are encouraged to apply.

Organization Description

The Savanna Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Madison, Wisconsin and Urbana, Illinois. Established in 2013, we work in collaboration with farmers, scientists, and other stakeholders to develop perennial food and fodder crops within multifunctional systems grounded in ecology and inspired by the savanna biome. Position Opening – Spring Green Field Crew

This position will work to advance agroforestry by supporting the development and management of Savanna Institute’s Spring Green Campus Home Farms. Farms feature the development of novel tree crop varieties within integrated agroforestry systems. This position will work closely with the WI Farm Director, other Savanna Institute staff, community partners, collaborating farmers/landowners, and farm visitors. 

Job Description

Hours: full-time

Location: Spring Green, WI

Start Date: March 2023

Salary: $20-22/hr, commensurate with experience

  • This position is eligible for the Institute’s benefits package. Details available on request.
  • This is a full-time, year-round position with flexibility for limited hours during the winter months 
  • Hourly rate commensurate with experience
  • This position reports to the WI Farm Director

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Outdoor fieldwork in agroforestry systems including: general upkeep, maintenance and site management of the four farms. Activities could include: mowing, weed management, ground preparation, tree planting, spraying, harvesting, pruning, chainsaw work, pest scouting, and any other associated field work tasks
  • Facilities maintenance and infrastructure development 
  • Job-based training 

Qualifications

  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds 
  • Ability to work outside, long hours in challenging conditions
  • Demonstrated Farming Experience 
  • Commitment to participating in an open and collaborative environment 
  • Openness to participating in the development and establishment of new systems
  • Willingness to work independently with strong self-direction 
  • GED degree, or equivalent 
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation 

Ideal candidates will have: 

  • Familiarity with regenerative farming, agroforestry, or perennial agriculture 
  • Experience in farming, landscaping, forestry, or other fieldwork-based fields 
  • Experience with farming and land management equipment (ie. tractors and associated implements, mowers, powered hand tools, etc.) 
  • Experience with facilities management 
  • Basic mechanic and carpentry experience
  • Chainsaw certification or demonstrated experience equivalent 
  • Strong communication skills
