Full-Time Special Assistant to Chief Program Officer

United States of Care is seeking a Special Assistant to the Chief Program Officer to join its growing team. The mission of United States of Care is to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable health care regardless of health status, social need, or income. United States of Care is a non-partisan non-profit that is building and mobilizing a movement to achieve long-lasting solutions that make health care better for everyone. United States of Care will help make it happen by working with people from across the country: patients and caregivers, advocates, physicians and other clinicians, policymakers, and business, civic, and religious leaders.

Position Overview

A full time position, the Special Assistant reports to and supports the Chief Program Officer, an Executive Team member. The Special Assistant is a mission driven, motivated, entrepreneurial, and enthusiastic professional with extraordinary communication skills and ability to handle multiple priorities. The Special Assistant has strong project management experience to support the Chief Program Officer on external strategic initiatives and internal workflow. The ideal candidate will have a professional record that demonstrates their ability to deftly balance internal and external priorities and is enthusiastic about working across the organization’s programs, including policy, external affairs, communications, and public engagement.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist the Chief Program Officer in prioritizing and managing multiple strategic initiatives simultaneously – ability to see the big picture as well as manage to the details;
  • Streamline and manage the Chief Program Officer’s workflow by coordinating internal review of materials; scheduling and maintenance of calendar; prioritizing appointments and meetings; responding to incoming requests and inquiries; and managing timekeeping and other internal tracking;
  • Assist the Chief Program Officer in preparing for internal and external meetings, including gathering content and research that has been prepared by relevant teams, and as needed preparing new materials, policy briefings, talking points, and presentations;
  • Prepare agendas, make travel arrangements, manage expenses, and receipts;
  • Convert brainstorming and strategic planning sessions into draft products, proposals, agendas, and plans;
  • Draft correspondence and manage draft revisions;
  • Participate in the design and monitoring of assessment tools and outcomes measurements;
  • Assist in special organizational projects as they arise;
  • Commitment to prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, including utilizing organization’s equity lens to inform all work;
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • 3-5 years experience, including time as a project manager, assistant or support role;
  • A strong commitment to ensuring everyone has access to quality, affordable health care and dedication to operating in a diverse, bipartisan, learning atmosphere exploring multiple policy solutions to achieve that mission;
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in your work;
  • Previous experience in nonprofits, government, policy or advocacy; experience in health care policy preferred;
  • Prior experience in calendar management is essential, must be able to balance and prioritize competing demands for Chief Program Officer’s time;
  • Must be able to commute within the Washington, DC metro area occasionally as needed;
  • Proficient knowledge of GSuite applications and Microsoft Office products including PowerPoint and Excel;
  • Experience with databases, specifically Raiser’s Edge, preferred;
  • Ability to respect and handle sensitive and confidential information with high ethical standards;
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail, ability to handle and manage multiple projects and deadlines at once and deal with competing priorities;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders – is thoughtful, curious, and personable;
  • Demonstrated project management skills;
  • Demonstrated strategic and critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to take informed risks, step out of your comfort zone and embrace ambiguity; use organization’s collective intelligence to solve problems, weigh outcomes, and take calculated risks;
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and an ability to handle whatever is thrown at you with confidence and a positive attitude.

Compensation and Location 

The salary for this position is $50,000 – $65,000 depending on experience.

This position is full-time and United States of Care offers a very generous benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403b with match, and paid time off. While this position is currently remote, candidates must be located in and able to commute within the Washington, DC metro area.
