Friendship Place is nonprofit organization, serving the Washington, DC region, empowering individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness to rebuild their lives with the involvement of the community.  Friendship Place offers the most effective model for addressing homelessness, with innovative, customized programs that have positive, demonstrable results and a lasting impact on the community and beyond.  Our programs are person-centric and individualized to meet the needs and goals of individuals, families, youth/young adults and Veterans experiencing homelessness. We provide outreach, hospitality, health care, case management, housing, job placement services, and advocacy. We have established a national presence and are known for sharing best practices in the field.

Summary: 

The Brooks Program provides short-term housing services to families experiencing homelessness in the District. The building contains 50 units and is located in Northwest DC. The program follows a Housing First model philosophy and utilizes best practices to ensure participants can be transitioned out of short-term family housing to independent housing within 90 days. The Shift Supervisor will ensure the smooth operation of each shift.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Provides supervision and performance management of the Residential Aides to ensure each shift runs smoothly.
  • Provides appropriate oversight of the participants at the short-term family housing site and enforces program policies.
  • Provides an efficient and safe working environment for participants, employees, and visitors at the short-term family housing site. This includes ensuring spills are attended to and universal precautions are utilized
  • Reviews, explains and provides each family with a copy of the program rules during intake and reviews the rights and responsibilities with the residents.
  • Processes intakes according to the program’s rules, procedures, etc.
  • Ensures a daily log is maintained to record all activities and information.
  • Provides de-escalation services to the participants as needed and to ensure safety and well-being of all staff and residents, including contacting MPD, Mobile Crisis, and/or CHAMPS as necessary.
  • Primary point of contact for Operations Leadership on building matters
  • Ensures noise within the facility is kept at a minimum during the overnight shift.
  • Ensures all staff remain awake and alert at all times
  • Report any instances of pests to Operations Leadership
  • Ensure the submittal of all Unusual Incident Reports (UIR’s) in the appropriate time frame during each shift
  • Coordinates the delivery, storage, disposal off and distribution of meals.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Background & Qualifications:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience working in a residential or shelter setting.
  • Must have supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with families and/or youth and knowledge of child development and child welfare is preferred.
  • General knowledge of working in a homeless shelter or residential facility preferred.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

Office is housed in a short-term family housing facility.  Position will spend time between office/desk settings and roving the occupied STFH floors and grounds of The Brooks. Position will view security camera and footage. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Walking 70% of the time, bending at the knees, standing for extended periods of time.
Background Checks:

The selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check including FBI, Police background check (of the jurisdictions in which they have resided for the five years prior to employment) Child and Family Services Agency (CSFA) Child Protection Register/ DC Child Abuse Registry, and National Sex Offender Registry Department(s) of the jurisdictions in which they have resided for the five years prior to employment; Drug and Alcohol testing and TB testing.

  • Provides excellent customer service and demonstrates reliability.

  • Demonstrate empathy when responding to participants needs and requests.
  • Use practices including trauma informed care, verbal judo and other de-escalation and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Ability to remain calm, collected, and professional under stress.
  • Punctuality and ability to work independently.
  • Experience with computer programs, including but not limited to excel spreadsheets, emailing, etc.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to mission, organizational core values including racial equity and social justice.

  • Compensation: The hiring pay range is between $18.54- $19.67 per hour.  Depending on the position, the starting hourly pay rate or annual salary is based on a step system.  A candidate’s starting pay determination is made based on meeting the basic position requirements, and current completed education, credentials and/or work experience.  Please Note: The step system is set and not open to pay negotiation.  Before moving forward in the selection process, interested applicants are encouraged to discuss starting pay eligibility with the Human Resources (Talent) Department.
