Your role

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding position reporting one of the critical stories of our times? CBC News is looking for a Senior Health Reporter. The challenge, of course, comes from the constantly evolving pandemic. The reward comes from the importance of the work you’ll be doing and the support of a smart, collaborative and passionate team.

Candidates must be fascinated by medical science, able to critically evaluate emerging research and skilled at communicating it to our audiences. What are we also looking for? Candidates with ideas, creativity and a keen sense of the difference good health reporting can make in the world. A key part of that is an understanding of the importance of diversity of perspective to engage underserved and underrepresented audiences.

Strong broadcast reporting skills are a prerequisite.

As Senior Reporter, you’ll be responsible for pitching original stories for network radio news programs, The National and digital platforms.

You must also have a clear understanding of the CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

The position is based in Toronto.

Main responsibilities:
Research and generate original stories for radio, television and digital platforms ranging from daily news to longer-form pieces;
Recognize important health stories quickly and deliver live reports and analysis as required;
Analyze complex issues to enhance the understanding of CBC audiences;
Work collaboratively with the team and with producers, videographers and editors;
Develop and maintain contacts with a wide range of sources.

Your profile:
Excellent grasp of health news, proven ability in the field and strong production skills.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of and connection to underrepresented communities.
10 years of comparable and relevant experience preferred.
Exceptional reporting, memorable writing and digital storytelling.
Excellent interviewing and presentation skills.
Proven ability to use social media platforms to both research and expand the reach of our stories.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work with a variety of teams.
Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment.
Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to work flexible hours and on weekends as needed.
Knowledge of the public broadcaster’s role, responsibilities and journalistic standards.
Skill in using key CBC News production tools including but not limited to:
Media Central and Assist functions
Amnet VOD services
Google suite of products (Gmail, Meet, Docs/Sheets, etc.)
Audio editing tools such as Dalet/Adobe Audition
Field technologies including FTP and Dejero
Digital publishing tools including Polopoly
University degree in journalism or equivalent preferred.
