Job Description

We are reimagining the way quality journalism is delivered to readers. Join our growing team of ambitious engineers, designers, strategists, and writers on a mission to elevate the best journalism in the world through innovative products and yet-to-be-invented experiences. Use your talents to help us build what’s next for one of the most respected journalistic institutions. If you are looking for a job with purpose, this is it.

The Atlantic is looking for a talented designer and UX leader to join our thriving product design team. Product designers at The Atlantic are responsible for the visual design, user experience, IA, content organization, and UI design for our suite of digital products. In addition to being a talented visual designer, you should have deep experience with and a passion for information architecture, navigation system design, content structuring, and user-centered research. You will be expected to be well-versed in design best practices and contemporary industry standards. Often working within a design system, you should know when to apply established design patterns and styles, as well as when to evolve them and how to improve upon existing work. You will identify and help correct product inconsistencies, on both the visual and user experience sides. Most importantly, you will apply your talents at scale to create beautiful and easy-to-use interfaces that help our editorial team deliver stories more effectively and help our readers engage with our journalism.

This design leadership role is heavily focused on helping readers discover all that The Atlantic has to offer, to drive feature adoption and subscription growth, and improve customer retention. You will work closely with the subscription and customer journey teams. These teams are critical cross-functional squads composed of expert product strategists, engineers, and designers. The work of these teams is central to our mission to deliver the best subscriber experience possible. You will use your expertise to ensure that feature discovery and the subscription experience is effortless, delightful, and effective. Our subscribers are beloved and respected,  you will lead design efforts to optimize account management systems and subscriber benefits to deliver a best-in-class platform. Experience and expertise in subscription acquisition, customer journey mapping, product experimentation, account management and purchase flows is a huge plus. In this role, you will build products our readers love based on insights, data, user testing, and design intuition. The products you build will provide vital support to The Atlantic’s business as the company continues to grow.

What will you do?

Lead design for the team responsible for the subscription experience and account management.

Work on the entire lifecycle of the product: research, user flows, prototyping, high fidelity comps, and collaboration with engineers on implementation.

Collaborate closely with product managers, developers, editors, and other designers.

Help us evolve and expand our design system and enhance the brand expression on our product surfaces.

Balance the needs of the editorial team, the business, and readers.

Work on both customer-facing interfaces as well as internal tooling.

Contribute to the growth of your colleagues by providing feedback, candid critiques, and bringing fresh thinking to the team.

Identify opportunities for improvement in our products and process and take initiative to recommend solutions.

Who are you?

You are a self-driven design leader with an affinity for reader-centered solutions. Collaboration excites you and you’re adept at working closely with senior stakeholders and cross functional colleagues alike. You are as passionate about journalism and the mission of The Atlantic as you are about great design and solving complex reader challenges.

5+ years of professional experience working on digital products as a designer or UX lead.

You’ve designed and launched a number of successful mobile and web products.

Experience specific to media or publishing is a plus.

Expert UX/IA experience and a passion for user research.

E-commerce experience a plus

You enjoy both details of the craft and deliberate, long-term systems thinking. You enjoy perfecting typography just as much as creating a component library.

Demonstrate and articulate an understanding of layout, typography and visual hierarchy, coupled with user-centered design and product best practices.

Software expertise with modern product design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Experience using wireframing and prototyping tools, such as Invision, Omnigraffle, Framer, or Principle. A solid understanding of HTML and CSS. Coding experience is a plus.

Excellent communication and writing skills: can brainstorm with a group, articulate ideas, and tease out feedback from colleagues.

Enthusiasm for journalism at The Atlantic and a desire to contribute to the growth of our design culture.
