The Role

The Senior Educator position is a non-exempt, (hourly) position reporting to the Senior Manager, Facilitated Experiences. The Senior Educator is an essential member of the Facilitated Experiences team, which is responsible for delivering high energy, interactive experiences, including design-based learning programs and exhibits in The Tech’s galleries and science lab classrooms. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining and facilitating design challenge learning experiences and activities that focus on engaging youth in exploring science, design and engineering.

The Senior Educator will help to maintain the quality and spirit of our educational programs by serving as front-line staff delivering these programs, in addition to program development and day-to-day support. The Senior Educator is expected to be a lead educator, modeling best practices in facilitation for other members of the Facilitated Experiences team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Minimum of 60% time spent facilitating educational programs in The Tech’s science labs, Innovation Labs, and/or the gallery floor, as scheduled by the Senior Manager, Facilitated Experiences. More time facilitating may be scheduled as needed by management.
  • Work at least one weekend day and be flexible to change working hours for special events, programs and training when needed.
  • Work collaboratively with Facilitated Experiences management and The Tech’s content development team to develop, prototype, and execute innovative and engaging hands-on design-based STEAM learning programs and activities for diverse audiences.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Director, Interactive Learning Programs to develop and implement training opportunities that will enhance the facilitation skills of the Facilitated Experiences team of Educators and volunteers.
  • Take part in ongoing professional development training and staff meetings, sometimes taking place outside normal shift hours.
  • Attend team debriefs and staff meetings as required.
  • Understand and implement The Tech’s learning principles and philosophy.
  • Provide feedback on continuous improvement of The Tech’s educational programs, including science lab programs, innovation lab programs, and other facilitated experiences.
  • Provide support in The Tech’s evaluation efforts as needed.
  • Understand customer service expectations, training material and general organization policies.
  • Follow The Tech’s safety guidelines and attendance policies.
  • Follow The Tech’s attire and grooming guidelines.
  • Communicate all issues to The Tech staff as they arise.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in a public setting interacting with visitors and follow required safety protocols.
  • Completed BA/BS in education, science, engineering or equivalent experience strongly desired
  • Serious and passionate about science and technology, while also flexible, patient, and able to have fun with our students.
  • Teaching experience or experience working with children in a traditional or non-traditional educational setting. Experience with hands-on, cooperative learning instruction, highly desired.
  • Experience in engaging in and communicating technical/scientific topics to diverse groups with varying levels of exposure to and knowledge of the subject. Ability to appropriately adapt content as well as the ability to pace facilitation and make on-the-spot decisions as changes arise.
  • Ability to accurately understand, interpret, and communicate technical/scientific ideas to diverse groups of students.
  • Excellent facilitation skills that include the ability to communicate information to all guests in a way that inspires curiosity, creativity and problem solving that continues beyond their visit.
  • Experience developing and prototyping design-based learning experiences or curriculum in alignment with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently on developing and prototyping experiences and training opportunities.
  • Excellent organizational skills including time management.
  • Can offer and take constructive feedback; is happy to seek advice of mentors.
  • Willingness to work weekend days regularly, evenings and holidays.
  • Ability to adhere to The Tech’s grooming guidelines.
  • Fluency in one or more languages common to the San Francisco Bay Area is a plus.
  • Has a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and is able to demonstrate The Tech’s values.

 

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for significant periods of time.
  • Constantly positioning self based on the demonstration needs of each exhibit and program.
  • Frequently moves objects up to 25 pounds.
