Job Description

Who We Are

Arcadia is the technology company empowering energy innovators and consumers to fight the climate crisis. Our software and APIs are revolutionizing an industry held back by outdated systems and institutions by creating unprecedented access to the data and clean energy needed to make a decarbonized energy grid possible.

In 2014, Arcadia set out on its mission to break the fossil fuel monopoly and since then we have been knocking down the institutional barriers to unlock decarbonization. To date, we have connected hundreds of thousands of consumers and small businesses with high-quality clean energy options. Fast forward to today, and now, we’re thinking even bigger. We have launched Arc, an industry-defining SaaS platform that empowers developers and energy innovators to deliver their own custom, personalized energy experiences, accelerating the transformation of the industry from an analog energy system into a digitized information network.

Tackling one of the world’s biggest challenges requires out-of-the-box thinking & diverse perspectives. We’re building a team of individuals from different backgrounds, industries, & educational experiences. If you share our passion for ushering in the era of the clean electron, we look forward to learning what you would uniquely bring to Arcadia!

What we’re looking for:

We are seeking a Senior Director of Product Design to lead and scale the product design and design research functions at Arcadia — working with cross-functional leaders to help lead the company through its next critical growth phase. You will be an advocate for the customer while leading an outstanding design practice to uphold Arcadia’s high standards for design and product quality. Additionally, you must be passionate about decarbonization and sustainability — helping to further propel Arcadia’s mission of making renewable energy accessible to all.

This role will report to the Chief Product Officer. You will collaborate frequently with other leaders in the CPO org (Product Management, Data, Engineering) — as well other departments at Arcadia (Brand/Marketing, Sales, Enterprise, Operations, MX, Policymakers, Energy SMEs, and more).

Arcadia is headquartered in Washington, DC, and is open to fully remote candidates.

What you’ll do:

  • Partner with product management to define a vision and north star for both Arcadia’s Community Solar business and Arc, our API platform businesses
  • Drive cohesion of design and research initiatives across the product roadmap, infusing design thinking into developer platforms and API products
  • Hire and develop a very hardworking team of product designers and user experience researchers. You’ll provide mentorship and champion the craft and career development of your team, while creating a safe haven so designers and researchers can accomplish their best work
  • Provide guidance of the team’s output, facilitating cross-functional partnerships and the design process — where you’ll promote an outstanding design practice, influence product strategy, and ensure exceptional execution.
  • Form relationships with cross-functional team members and executives across organizations — where you’ll navigate dependencies, align on priorities, and shape goals
  • Be a champion for usability and accessibility — while upholding Arcadia’s high standards for design and product quality
  • Lead the strategy our design system and component library that all of Arcadia’s products are built on, focusing on scalability and consistency
  • Represent the customer, their needs, and what’s best for them by creating feedback loops with research initiatives and the development of user personas

What will help you succeed:

  • 10+ years of relevant design experience in digital products, including 4+ years in people management (including being a manager of managers)
  • A diverse portfolio of work designed and shipped by you and/or your team, along with examples of work directed and delivered by your team that demonstrates cutting-edge digital work, a deep understanding of customer needs and unique approaches to problem solving
  • Experience in building 0 to 1 products and setting the vision & strategy for next generation products
  • Experience running product designers and UX researchers with the ability to build, mentor, and motivate teams
  • Experience synthesizing company-level goals to help teams across multiple business lines create remarkable customer experiences and design solutions
  • Strong systems thinking, and the ability to understand complex feature, ecosystem, and platform dynamics
  • Experience leading design teams through successful product launches across responsive/mobile web, iOS, and Android
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills, expert influencer, and advocate for the customer
  • Ability to be flexible and handle priorities in a high-productivity environment with a bias towards action
  • Experience recruiting and hiring top talent, as well as cultivating talent and growing teams with varied strengths
  • Experience with B2B Enterprise SaaS, particularly in developer experiences and API products a plus
  • Front-end development experience (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Degree in Human Factors, HCI, Design, Cognitive Science, Graphic Design, Interaction Design, similar field of study, or equivalent practical experience.

  • “Remote first” culture – work anywhere in the US as long as you have a reliable internet connection
  • Flexible PTO – no accrued hours and no limit on the number of vacation days employees can take each year
  • 15 annual company-wide holidays including a week long “summer break”
  • 10 days sick leave
  • Up to 4 weeks bereavement leave
  • 2 volunteer days off
  • 2 professional development days off
  • 12 weeks paid parental leave for all parents
  • Weekly “flex time” – no internal meetings on Tuesdays and Friday afternoons
  • 80-95% employer cost coverage for medical, dental, and vision benefits for employees and dependents
  • Annual budget to use on conferences, books, classes, workshops or anything that contributes to professional development
