Your role

Reporting to the Editor in Chief & Executive Director of Daily News, the Senior Director of Digital Publishing & Streaming ensures long-term achievement of CBC’s journalistic and audience objectives on digital, social video and audio streaming platforms. The main focus of this cross-departmental role is the planning, direction and oversight of journalistic programming, production, operations and business administration on digital and emerging platforms across CBC News, Current Affairs and Local. Additionally, this role will drive innovation, audience development and corporate objectives in conjunction with Digital Products and the Senior Director of Innovation and Partnerships. The role is strategic and future-focused on journalistic excellence, audience growth, engagement and retention.

What you do:

In conjunction with the senior leadership team of CBC News, Current Affairs and Local, help design and deliver on multi-year strategic vision and objectives for digital publishing, on-demand and streaming video, audio and social media content, in line with CBC’s journalistic standards.
Harmonize and align strategy for emerging platforms across CBC’s journalism division and in conjunction with other CBC departments.
Implement strategies that will broaden and grow audiences and revenue opportunities, while defining CBC News, Current Affairs and Local as the innovative digital news leader in Canada.
Ensure the digital leadership team is setting editorial priorities, developing innovative content strategies around breaking news and upcoming stories, and planning coverage of major events in line with audience growth and retention objectives.
Operationalize and execute on CBC’s strategic priorities around diversity and inclusion, the reflection of contemporary Canada and trusted, essential journalism
Work closely with Senior Managing Directors and Managing Editors of the integrated multiplatform newsgathering operation and local markets across the country to develop and implement digital programming strategies
Work closely with CBC’s Digital Products teams to ensure our audience experiences work hand in glove with our text, video and audio.
Work closely with CBC’s Senior Director of Innovation and Partnership on strategy and transformation
Oversee editorial and technical development of new digital properties and projects, ensuring delivery on time and on budget.
Ensure that a formal evaluation process is in place for journalistic programming and programming values.
Ensure the development of cross-promotion and programming strategies and their implementation on digital platforms.
Champion newsroom innovation in line with audience needs and expectations.
In concert with your leaders, is responsible for all editorial human resources, including overall management and engagement of staff, career development, hiring, training, communication, performance management and discipline.
Works with the Editor in Chief and finance personnel to ensure that budgets are properly prepared and adhered to, and costs are tracked and controlled.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
Minimum of 10 years related industry experience.
Strong journalistic experience and knowledge of digital news, video and audio production in order to lead, develop, implement, and evaluate news programming on existing and emerging platforms.
Proven ability to work and drive success across departments in matrix organizations and manage relationships in a collaborative fashion
Proven ability to set digital news strategy and create the conditions necessary for success.
Recognition as an industry leader in digital journalism
Proven track record in management, including experience with business development, budgeting and human resources
Strong understanding of media trends and their implications for the future of CBC News, Current Affairs and Local, including experience leading strategy around multi-platform journalism, social media, third-party distribution, on-demand and streaming video and audio.
Demonstrable leadership and management skills and experience to inspire and direct staff during periods of significant change.
Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
The ability to contribute to the diversity of perspectives on the team. Experience mentoring emerging leaders is an asset.
High journalistic standards and ethics, with an understanding of industry best practices and trusted news initiatives in digital spaces
Strong creative, communication and interpersonal skills to motivate journalism leaders as they develop content ideas and find solutions to a variety of technical, resource and operational issues.
Proven ability to make executive-level decisions rapidly and frequently to tight deadlines.
Ability to handle constantly changing and multiple priorities while juggling tasks and/or projects.
Personnel management skills, incorporating a deft combination of directness and sensitivity, and experience leading large numbers of employees.
Strong analytical skills to solve complex journalistic and operational issues.
Strong financial skills.
Ability to represent and speak publicly on behalf of the organization
Ability to work without supervision.
Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting, publishing and journalism.
