Full-Time Senior Development Manager, Private Sector – Institutional Donors

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Development Manager, Institutional Donors works closely with the Vice President, Global Development to increase funding by researching, identifying, and engaging prospective new institutional donors, as well as stewarding and expanding relationships with current donors, raising upwards of $3-5 million a year in support of Internews’ mission and impact. They will be expected to lead and execute on a comprehensive strategy for Internews to raise funds from private sector institutional donors, including foundations and corporations in the US. This will include the cultivation of existing donors as well as developing and cultivating new donor relationships. Where required, they will track and review donor Requests for Applications/proposals (RFAs/RFPs) and determine strategies for application and design of responsive programs. They will be responsible for strategizing for the refunding of existing programming supported by private sector donors. They will supervise a private development Senior Business Development Associate, and may supervise others should the need and/or growth of the organization’s funding successes with foundations and/or corporations require it.

LOGISTICS

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Internews’ Headquarters offices are currently closed, and staff are working remotely until at least 1 July 2021. Until then, this position will also be expected to function remotely. Ultimately, this position will be based either remotely, or from our Washington, D.C. headquarters office.

You should apply with the understanding that work hours will need to be coordinated to align in part with those of colleagues in the Africa, Asia, and Europe regions, as well as with those of colleagues based on the East Coast of the United States (GMT -5). The ideal candidate will be based in the Washington, D.C. metro area; however, remote candidates based anywhere in the US will be considered. Candidates who prefer an office-based position should feel free to express this preference.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

  • Supervise one staff member working on private development and fundraising;
  • Develop and execute annual plans for private sector fundraising from institutional donors, including a plan to make pitches, represent the organization at conferences, and write and submit concept notes and proposals;
  • Working in collaboration with others, represent Internews with private sector donors and partners, including securing and preparing for donor meetings by preparation of briefing;
  • Identify donor forums and consortia and augment Internews’ visibility in these donor networks, meetings, and conferences;
  • Build relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization;
  • Lead on researching private sector donor opportunities, prospects, and leads;
  • Provide writing guides, outlines for ideas for consideration, concept notes, and proposals for teams working to raise private sector funds;
  • Provide strategic guidance to program and technical teams seeking private sector funding, as well as to finance and business development staff in preparing budgets and financial reports for private sector donors;
  • Work with finance staff in preparing private donor revenue forecasting for board meetings as well as draft narrative updates on private sector fundraising for board reports;
  • Review and analyze Requests for Applications/proposals from private sector donors and help determine potential strategy for application in consultation with Internews program staff;
  • Lead proposal design for strategically important private sector opportunities, using Internews tools to support strong program design including logical frameworks, worksheets, and other tools as appropriate;
  • Lead proposal design teams in selecting winning themes, identifying best practices and making key partnering decisions as appropriate;
  • Write and edit concept notes and proposals following donor guidelines and in line with Internews’ internal processes and standards;
  • As appropriate, position Internews as a possible sub-grantee in proposal applications; member of relevant consortia;
  • Using Salesforce and other tools, monitor and evaluate development activities to ensure that private sector fundraising goals are being achieved;
  • Monitor trends in the sector and adapt strategies as necessary;
  • Manage donor engagements for President and others as requested/desired;
  • As requested, train and mentor Internews staff and communicate fundraising goals and progress throughout the organization;
  • As requested or needed, carry out field assignments in anticipation of upcoming business development opportunities for private sector donors of strategic importance;
  • As required, work with communications to prepare event materials and briefing papers for donor pitches; and
  • In all duties, an understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews’ Core Values.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Required

  • At least seven years of experience in non-profits, with at least five years of prior work experience in private sector development with a proven track record of raising money from private sector donors
  • Two or more years of management experience required
  • Project leadership experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/Board of Directors
  • Prior experience with researching private sector donors
  • Passion for the role of media and increased access to information in changing lives
  • Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones
  • Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising
  • Excellent writing skills, with proven ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials
  • Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences
  • Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; highly skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with both donors and peers
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in a multicultural environment; must be able and willing to work well with a diverse range of colleagues to achieve ambitious fundraising targets
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed
  • Relevant University degree required
  • Skilled in MS Office

Preferred

  • Prior experience working in the media development and/or information technology fields preferred
  • Prior experience raising health, environment, and/or humanitarian funding, in addition to media/information funding, is preferred
  • Two or more years of experience working abroad preferred
  • Advanced degree in media/information, development, health, or another relevant field preferred
  • Native level fluency in English is required; French, Arabic, or Spanish language skills a bonus
  • Prior experience with Salesforce preferred
  • Prior experience with private sector donors in Europe not required but preferred
