Job Description

Title:                    Senior Clinician

Department:      Client Services (CS)

Reports to:         Manager of the Clinical Program

Start Date:          December 2023/January 2024

The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) envisions a world in which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), and HIV-affected people are safe, respected, and live free from violence. AVP’s mission is to empower LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and support survivors through counseling and advocacy.


The Senior Clinician:

  • Provides direct services, counseling, including advocacy, referrals, and accompaniment to LGBTQ and HIV-affected survivors of intersecting forms of violence.
  • Provides coverage and support for Client Services Hotline.
  • Supports the Clinical Program and clinicians.
  • Represents AVP at City- and State-wide coalition and collaborative work addressing violence within and against LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities.
  • Coordinates Clinical Case Conferencing Meetings with department staff



All services and programming will be focused on LGBTQ and HIV-affected survivors of all forms of violence, including but not limited to hate, intimate partner, sexual violence, hook-up, HIV-related, police, and other institutional violence.

  • Provide crisis intervention services and conduct intake interviews for incoming hotline calls and walk-in clients.
  • Provide ongoing Clinical services to clients, including, but not limited to:
    • Individual counseling sessions for a caseload of 7 to 10 clients.
    • Information and referrals, supporting clients’ access to services, and helping them overcome institutional barriers.
    • Coordination with the Legal Department around providing integrated social and legal services to survivors.
  • Support and actively participate in the designing, implementation, and facilitation of support groups.
  • Support the Manager of Prevention and Hotline Programs in the operation of AVP’s 24/7 English-Spanish Hotline, including volunteer training, coordination, scheduling, and support, e.g. rotating as back up for hotline shifts.
  • Support the Clinical Manager with onboarding new clinical staff and interns.
  • Work with the Clinical Manager and other Client Services Leadership staff on framing and updating protocols specific to the Clinical Program.
  • Provide services related to partnerships with external organizations striving to support LGBTQ+ survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence.
  • Train stakeholders on clinical and systems advocacy for LGBTQ and HIV-affected survivors, and on violence within and against these communities, across New York City.
  • Represent AVP at relevant inter-agency coalitions and task-force meetings, including in leadership and coordination role for AVP-led direct services consortiums.
  • Lead and coordinate the monthly Clinical Case Conferencingmeetings, planning agenda items and facilitating.
  • Lead, coordinate, and facilitate the monthly Manhattan Collaborative Direct Service providers meetings.
  • Provide services related to OVW Grant. Directly supporting clients with OVW related services
  • Attend Client Services (CS) department staff meetings including FLASH, CS Department Meeting and CS Group Supervision.

Agency and Administrative-Related:

  • Attend monthly full AVP staff meetings and staff discussions.
  • Attend in-service training and external training/seminars as appropriate.
  • Participate actively in AVP’s AO process, including joining, participating in, and attending monthly AO Working Group and other meetings, as needed.
  • Assist with and attend AVP signature events
  • Enter all clinical client services data accurately and in a timely manner into tracking and data management systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality and other appropriate boundaries.
  • Other duties as directed by supervisor



  • and to members of LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities, included crisis intervention.
  • Degree in social work or related field strongly preferred including MSW, LMSW or LCSW,
  • Demonstrated commitment to working to end all forms of violence within and against of LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities.
  • Be able to talk about their experience supporting people who identify as LGBTQ, people living with HIV, people of color, immigrants, low-income people, and survivors of violence.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience navigating the civil and criminal legal system preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort level interacting with diverse stakeholders such as Community Based Organizations, community members, government officials, law enforcement officials and courts.
  • Experience in community organizing, coalition building and coordinating, and/or policy advocacy a plus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and skill-building required.
  • Be comfortable and confident working in a multi-disciplinary, direct service / crisis management setting within an anti-oppression approach required.
  • Have the capacity to set effective boundaries and honor confidentiality.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Experience with data management systems, a plus.


Salary: This is a non-exempt position with a base salary range of $63,000 – $65,000. Applicants who use more than one language at work are eligible to receive a $1,500 salary enhancement in addition to base salary.
