SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

Summary:

The Manager of Campus Public Safety will assist with supervising assigned staff and contracted security services to provide protection and security for individuals, facilities, and on campus property. Assist in patrolling, inspecting buildings, grounds, and equipment. Coordinate and respond to requests for assistance. Enforce rules of behavior on campus. Manage department operations, including but not limited to: safety, security, first aid training, emergency management operations, parking and traffic management, environmental health, and hazard control programs. This is an exempt, professional-technical management position that reports to the Director, Campus Public Safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Supervise and direct the safety and security office’s operations; ensure operations follow college policies and local, state, and federal laws and regulations

• Liaison with college management and community to ensure compliance with policies and regulations; meet with internal constituents and external agencies on safety and security procedures, equipment purchases or repairs

• Prepare and present oral and written reports and presentations; develop, maintain, implement, and communicate current safety, security, and health policies and procedures

• Patrol and inspect buildings and grounds by foot, bicycle, and/or vehicle to ensure personal safety and to detect and prevent theft, illegal entry, escapes and fire/water property damage; enforce rules and policies; monitor erratic behavior and escort hostile visitors from buildings. Maintain safety and security databases and management information systems; ensure compliance with college, local, state, and federal reporting requirements for crime and safety statistics and information

• Manage college building access and security management systems; maintain, issue, and track all college keys

• Assist in compliance with Clery Act regulations. Participate as a member of the Clery Compliance Committee

• Manage college hazardous waste program; serve as chemical spill response team leader; train employees and students on storing and removing hazardous waste. File the annual hazardous waste activities report with the Department of Ecology

• Monitor and conduct safety and ergonomic inspections; investigate work related accidents and injuries and recommend appropriate corrective action

• Perform regular tests and drills on the emergency management communication systems and solicit feedback from key stakeholders

• Manage emergency management operations, coordinate emergency response with appropriate administrators, and act as an on-scene commander; maintain college emergency management plan; ensure compliance with the national incident management system (NIMS)

• Manage campus parking and traffic program; monitor vehicles on campus; issue citations for violations; report suspected criminal activity to law enforcement; review and recommend action on parking citations and appeals

• Maintain current knowledge of safety and security management including best practices, standards, and all applicable laws; coordinate and provide training to college employees

• Coordinate and conduct investigations as needed in line with proper investigative techniques Assist with supervising, training, and evaluating assigned staff and contractors; develop and monitor staff annual growth/professional development plans; determine schedules and ensure proper security coverage for the college

• Assist with managing assigned departmental budgets as assigned; also assist with departmental planning, establishing departmental goals, and assessing department activities

• Chair college safety committee and make recommendations to Executive Cabinet as needed

• Provide information and assistance to individuals as needed; escort visitors, staff, and students to and from buildings; respond to requests and public inquiries; promote community and staff goodwill; on occasion, represent the college at professional and community organizations; take part in college and state committees as needed and college professional development and in-service activities

• Assist supervisor and other college administrators as necessary; assume and effectively discharge other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree with major study in criminal science, occupational health, public administration, or related field; significant combination of education and professional experience may substitute for degree

• Minimum of three years’ experience administering environmental health, safety, and security programs; related experience in a large/complex organization required

• Valid WA state driver’s license and First Aid/CPR certification

• Satisfactory completion of criminal history background investigation required before employment

• Formal investigation training preferred

• Knowledge of local, state and federal safety and environmental regulations; knowledge of accident prevention principles and environmental/safety program management

• Ability to perform assigned duties consistent with applicable laws and college policies and goals

• Ability to respond calmly in stressful situations; knowledge of on-scene command and control principles

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs

• Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills required; ability to manage self and others effectively; demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse populations

Compensation & Work Schedule

Salary is $5,165 per month. This is a full-time, position. Working hours are typically 8:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday; however, hours may vary as needed. This is an exempt position and employment is at-will.
