£37,400 – £44,000 per annum (plus benefits).

Summary

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in service support and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent, and delivering the most technically complex programmes in Defence. We employ over 1500 people and have an annual spend of c. £3.5 billion.

This role offer the opportunity to work in a diverse and multi-disciplined team within the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), focusing on the procurement and support of some of the most complex equipment in the world. The SDA is responsible for the UK’s submarine maintenance and build programme, which is one of the UK defence’s top priorities and contains some of the nation’s largest Capital programmes.

Working with our key industrial partners, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Babcock Marine, we are striving towards delivering submarine capability safely, securely, and more effectively every year.

Our Engineering function enables the delivery of our equipment and support by providing specialist expertise in domain-related disciplines such as: Mechanical, Electrical & Power Distribution; Software, Sensors & Electronic Systems; Acquisition Safety & Environmental Protection; Quality Assurance; Ordnance Munitions & Explosives, as well as Systems Engineering & Integration.

Job description

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer for an exciting and challenging role!

The SDA Engineering Function has an opportunity for you to join the ISM (In-Service Submarines) team as an Engineering Manager in HMNB Devonport.

In this role, you will be supporting the team in delivering one of the biggest programmes in the UK today. Using your Engineering proficiency, you will provide engineering expertise and operational effectiveness at the waterfront as the Mechanical Engineering agent for ISM.

You will be responsible for providing customer-facing support for pneumatic, hydraulic, fluid and secondary propulsion systems fitted to Nuclear Submarines on behalf of the ISM Chief Engineer. As the local representative of the Chief Engineer, you will engage daily with Submarine assets, members of the Royal Navy and supporting contract organisation to diagnose and assess equipment and system issues.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the role will include:

• Performing technical design requirements to improve safety, capability and availability.
• Undertaking design tasks including platform survey and verification.
• Monitoring effectiveness of design whilst approving design changes to UK Submarines from the waterfront.
• Advising on acceptable repair methodology, and where necessary seek advice from the relevant System Design Authority.
• Work in a fast-paced environment supporting the delivery of the UK Submarines, and, as such, you will be expected to work abnormal patterns to support the programme.
• Work in an exciting and fast-growing team that could provide future line management responsibilities.
• Train and mentor deployment of junior engineers on secondment to the waterfront.
• Ability to make robust decisions under significant programme pressures.
• Autonomous management style with the ability to make decisions on your own is vital as this position works independently away from the parent organisation.

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• A minimum Level 4 (e.g. HNC) qualification in a relevant Engineering subject OR able to demonstrate suitable and relevant experience.
• Chartered Engineer Status OR have the desire/ability to work towards Chartered Engineer Status within 12 months of being in the role.
• Strong communication skills.

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• Nuclear Safety and Security experience equivalent.
• Information knowledge the Defence Nuclear Programme.
• Naval Reactor experience and Supporting Infrastructure Maintenance.
• Marine mechanical engineering background coupled with the ability to assess complex engineering issues.
• Leading a team using mentoring and training skills.
