The Royal Navy’s Submarine Service has operated the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent every hour of every day for nearly 50 years, protecting our nation from the most extreme threats. The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) are recruiting for a Key Supply Manager to work across all elements of the submarine programme, helping deliver the UK’s next generation of ballistic missile submarines – The Dreadnought Class – and support the existing fleet of in-service submarines.

This requirement sits within the Supply Management Team, part of Commercial Directorate of the SDA. You will work across all submarine programmes, working with stakeholders on improvement interventions, and ensuring proper engagement with selected submarine programme suppliers. Alongside key industry partners, you will identify supplier fragility, quality, or poor performance, and instigate the action required to improve this status, and engage with suppliers to make business improvement programmes. The ability of our suppliers to deliver on their quality assurance commitments and achieve their key performance metrics is critical to the successful delivery of our submarine programmes.

Please note that due to the nature of the projects involved, this position is reserved for Sole UK Nationals only.

Responsibilities

You will have a high degree of autonomy, working independently and remotely, with regular and potentially substantial (1-2 days p/w) travel, some of which may be international. You will not have any internal delivery manager responsibility but will be required to lead the activities of wider Enterprise teams as required by any supplier intervention.

Responsibilities of the post will include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Initiate, develop and manage improvement plans for SDA sub-tier suppliers identified as requiring intervention for reasons of fragility, poor performance or quality, or because they are of strategic importance to the outputs.
• Engaging with key stakeholder, both prime contractors and sub-tier suppliers
• Meeting frequently with other Key Supply Managers, to review progress of individually owned plans, share best-practice and offer insight into one another’s work
• Working closely with SDA Delivery Team stakeholders to understand and articulate their interests and risks associated with the sub-tier supply chain
• Undertaking root cause analysis to identify and understand the issues contributing to poor supplier performance and create a plan to put corrective actions in place
• Participating with and leading cross-functional and multi-party Enterprise teams
• Taking ownership of supplier development plans and monitoring the performance of suppliers against agreed plans
• Ensure technical and quality risks and opportunities are captured and actively managed
• Agree quality management and assurance approaches with suppliers and ensure technical risks are understood and managed
• Develop QA surveillance and assurance plans in response to supplier, supply chain and technical risk
• Contribute to Quality investigations, root cause analysis, internal process performance improvement activities and supplier escalations/interventions

What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Manufacturing and supply chain knowledge and experience
• The ability to engage and communicate at multiple levels, including with Commercial, Financial and Engineering subject matter experts, and to supplier board level
• Experience of working in a delivery environment at an operational level within a complex organisation
• Experience of managing commercial relationships and delivery of benefits
• Extremely good communicating and influencing skills
• Applied knowledge of QA within the acquisition and in-service environment
• Breadth of industry/manufacturing and QA experience gained from involvement with multiple projects and domains including supply chain engagement

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Experience and understanding of corporate recovery activity
• Experience and understanding of working within and driving collaborative culture
• Awareness of Commercial and Project Management (with an understanding of Prince 2 or APM methodologies)
• Awareness of Continuous Improvement and Problem-Solving toolsets (i.e. Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing)
