A unique and vital requirement for a Deputy Project Chief Engineer has arisen within the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), playing an essential role in the delivery of Design Authority and wider engineering outputs for the In-Service Submarine Delivery Team.

Working alongside the Project Chief Engineer, you will lead a team of engineers, providing engineering assurance and engineering programme management in support of In-Service Submarine key objectives: delivery of Continuous at Sea Deterrence and provision of submarines at very high readiness.

As the Deputy Project Chief Engineer, you will play a key role overseeing the existing team and be influential in its development. You will interact regularly with Senior Management, supporting Delivery Teams and our Engineers, with visibility of the work going on within, and across, the SDA and wider Nuclear Defence Organisation. You will lead a team shaping Engineering policy for In-Service Submarines and be responsible for delivering key improvement activities.

Your work will support and enable the safe, available and capable provision of In-Service Submarines, paramount to the integrity of the UK’s existing, and future, defence capability. This assignment is integral to the In-Service Submarine Delivery Team and wider SDA, ensuring we meet the needs and requirements of the Royal Navy.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for leading the following areas of the Project Chief Engineer’s team:
• Design Services Support Contracts – including, monitoring the performance of the contract and contractor, requirements capture and prioritisation of engineering delivery activities
• Engineering programme Management – leading the development and maintenance of the engineering programme, including a range of complex engineering projects and all Platform Systems Design Change activity
• Engineering Controls and Business Improvements – leading the team responsible for all engineering control policy and processes and driving through improvements to key engineering processes and activities
• Maintenance Optimisation and Through Life Management for Platform Systems and integration of maintenance optimisation activity at the whole boat level
• Deputising for Project Chief Engineer, as required, as the Whole Boat Approving Authority and the Platform Systems Major System Approving Authority

What you will be assessed against
To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

• You will hold Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (or equivalent) status, or be capable of achieving this within 6 months of appointment
• You will be Submarine SQEP (Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person) and be able to demonstrate your experience in senior technical roles within teams delivering or supporting submarines
• You will be qualified to a minimum of Level 6 (e.g. BEng) in a relevant Engineering discipline, or have equivalent relevant experience
• You will have experience of providing technical advice at a senior level and leading engineering teams in the delivery of successful outcomes in multidisciplinary projects
• You will have experience in technical decision making within high risk engineering environments, managing complex safety management systems and supporting arguments, and delivering high value, complex engineering projects and programmes
