About the Bard Early Colleges
The Bard Early Colleges (BECs) are founded on the belief that many high school–age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. The Bard Early Colleges act on this belief by providing younger scholars with a tuition-free, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts and sciences following the 9th and 10th grades. Students are taught by college faculty in seminar classes; they receive up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma.
Now in its second decade, the Bard Early College network serves over 3,000 students in campuses in Lower Manhattan and Queens, New York; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; and in Washington, DC. Since 2003, Bard College has awarded more than 3,000 A.A. degrees to its early college students.
Position Objectives:
The School Counselor will remain accessible and available to students for advising and counseling in regards to academic, educational, socio-emotional, short-term and long-term intra and interpersonal conflicts. School counselor candidates should be competent in serving as a consultant for students and families, faculty and staff for specific academic, educational, and socio-emotional needs as presented by the campus.
Additionally, the School Counselor will establish relationships with college admissions representatives and help them interpret and appreciate the unique BHSEC Baltimore transcript. The School Counselor also assists with in-house college fairs as well as event/trip planning and data management.
The successful candidate will have strong management and interpersonal skills, will function effectively as part of a team, and will show an interest in our mission and in enabling our students to make a smooth transition to four–year colleges or other appropriate paths. Prior experience with college admissions or advising is preferred.
As part of a small team, BHSEC Baltimore employees work together to ensure the completion of successful initiatives that center student outcomes. A good fit for this position is a motivated individual, a self-starter who is able to plan and execute projects from beginning to end, someone who is creative, and solutions-oriented.
The School Counselor will report to the Principal of BHSEC Baltimore and will work closely with the BHSEC Baltimore administrative team. This position is for a 10 month contract with Baltimore City Public Schools.
Duties
College and financial aid guidance (both in and outside of routine college advisory classroom space)
- Utilize data to determine college readiness and to determine interventions needed to assist students in a grade appropriate manner to access high school and post high school options.
- Coordinate with college faculty and the student activities office on field trips and other experiential learning activities
- Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans.
- Collaborates with parents/guardians, educators, and stakeholders to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
Student Emotional and Social Support
- Uses data to develop comprehensive programs that meet the needs of students; implement the school counseling program and develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program; develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program.
- Provide counseling sessions and support socio-emotional treatment plans to promote positive student well-being
- Communicate with students and families to best understand students’ academic, socio-emotional and behavioral needs
- Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
- Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions.
- Provides individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students.
- Consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.
- Assist faculty and staff with developing treatment plans to address students’ socio-emotional and behavioral needs
- Assist at-risk and students with disabilities with early college transitional needs
- Connect students and families to local resources and supports for assistance and counseling during times of distress or crisis
- Uses data to guide program planning; conducts a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation and effectiveness.
- Implements classroom guidance lessons as required by the needs of the school
- Supports, participates in, or implements, as required by the needs of the school, IEP team, Student Support Team (SST), Instructional Leadership Team (ILT), Restorative Practices (RP), attendance meetings and supports, and other social-emotional supports as required by the need and staffing model of the school.

Compensation: $52,712 – $93,279 (compensation commensurate with experience)

Desired Qualifications
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or institution.
- Certified as a School Counselor by the State of Maryland.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in the knowledge and use of technology and computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience in urban schools is preferred.
- Knowledge of current research and trends in school counseling and guidance.
- Knowledge of current research and trends in college and career readiness.
- Knowledge of crisis prevention and arbitration techniques.
- Ability to analyze data.
