Full-Time Resilience in Schools Coordinator

Job Description

Our programs focus on conserving wildlife, connecting people with nature, advancing equity and environmental justice, restoring habitat and waterways, growing outdoor opportunities, and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change. To advance this work and further support our mission, we seek a Houston Resilience-in-Schools Coordinator to join our South Central Region (SCR) team. This position will report to the Director of Education and Outreach for the Region and will work in close collaboration with our SCR Education team, particularly the Texas Education and Outreach Manager. Although the SCR office is based in Austin, this position will be based in Houston, Texas.

The person in this role will support and grow NWF’s PreK-12 programs in Houston and the greater metro area.  Areas of focus will include: 1) Engaging and empowering diverse communities to create and maintain pollinator/wildlife habitat, with a key aim of improving both wildlife and human health as well as climate resiliency; 2) Providing more equitable opportunities for kids to gain an appreciation and understanding of the natural world, through NWF’s Eco-Schools USA and Schoolyard Habitats programs, and 3) Providing Professional Development to teachers, school staff, and other community members about environment-based education, climate-resilience education, and sustainability, with a strong focus on Green STEM and Project-Based Learning.

The Resilience-in-Schools Coordinator will help organize and manage existing projects and develop and grow new projects. Central to this role is the ability to develop strategic partnerships, fundraise, and assess and analyze opportunities to increase the efficiency and accessibility of NWF’s education programs and local offerings in the area.

In this role you will:

  • Organize all facets of advancing the NWF’s Education programs in the Houston Metro Area. This includes outreach, coordination with diverse stakeholders (students, teachers, and school administrative personnel, etc.), development of training and orientation programs for school audiences, youth engagement, event coordination, program documentation and tracking, fundraising, and database management, as applicable.
  • Work closely with NWF’s Texas Education and Outreach Manager to develop strategic partnerships to help expand the growth of Eco-Schools USA, Schoolyard Habitats, and other NWF education programs as appropriate.
  • Provide social media content to promote the NWF education work taking place in the greater Metro Houston area.
  • Work with NWF’s Director of Education and Outreach for the SCR to expand NWF education programs, focusing on habitat creation and resilience education along the Texas and Louisiana Coast.
  • Help inform and execute a fundraising plan to increase the capacity of NWF to deliver NWF PreK-12 education programs to the greater Houston Metro area. This will include:
    • Identifying and meeting with funders
    • Assisting the Regional Director of Education and the Regional Philanthropy Manager with drafting proposals and creating budgets
    • Assisting the Regional Philanthropy Manager with drafting reports to funders.

Minimum Qualifications and Core Competencies

  • A College Degree in Environmental Science, Education, Wildlife Biology, Communications, or related field
  • 3 years of relevant work or volunteer experience in formal or informal education, outreach, providing trainings, and volunteer management
  • Skilled public speaker and presenter
  • Professional demeanor, with the ability to exercise cultural competency and foster inclusion
  • Superior work ethic and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and problem solving skills
  • 2-3 years of fundraising (donor meetings, grant writing and reporting)
  • Proficiency with word processing, databases and PowerPoint software preferred
  • Ability to establish and cultivate relationships with potential partners and volunteers
  • Ability to relate effectively to people from diverse backgrounds, ranging from public officials to neighborhood residents
  • Ability to balance supervisor direction with being a self-starter
  • Sincere and demonstrated interest in environmental sustainability and education

Preferred

  • Knowledge or experience with gardening, habitat restoration, and/or native plant species identification
  • Knowledge or experience with climate resilience and climate resilience education

Travel Requirements

Travel will be restricted to no more that 15%. Weekend work may be necessary.

The National Wildlife Federation closely follows the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease and has implemented processes that promote the safety of our employees, job candidates, and communities.  Because the health of our employees and candidates is a top priority, we conduct our hiring process virtually via phone or video until further notice.  We are currently starting our positions as remote, but will transition to onsite work when our offices re-open, expected to be in 2022.  Proof of vaccination will be required to join the National Wildlife Federation.

This position pays $50,000 – $55,000 depending on experience.
