Full-Time Research and Development Engineer

Job Description

We, at Leggett & Platt Inc., are searching for a Research and Development Engineer within our Engineering team to help support our Adjustable Bed  business.  Did you know we have been revolutionizing the sleep industry since 1883?  That’s right!  In fact, we hold the original patent on a spiral steel coil bed spring, filed way back in 1885.  Since then, we have been an industry leader in guaranteeing you get the best sleep possible.  If you join our team, your work will ensure people across the world have a little more comfort in their lives.

As a Research and Development Engineer you will have the opportunity to design, plan, organize, integrate, and complete engineering projects.  Your contributions will have a direct impact on the business by researching and implementing alternatives that would alleviate current challenges.  The team you will be working with is close-knit, quirky, and collaborative, and values challenging work and diversity of thought.

So, what will you be doing as a(n) Research and Development Engineer?

  • Conduct research activities exploring new materials, technologies, and systems to develop new product solutions.
  • Research, investigate, and drive cutting-edge thinking to pursue industry innovative products, processes, and technology.
  • Design experience in R&D, or Pre-Product Development environment desired.
  • 3+ years of engineering experience in R&D or new development environment preferred.
  • Ability to generate prototypes and concepts to quickly vet ideas and communicate development results.
  • Working knowledge of broad material types.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Product design, creating prototype models and drawings.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager and the Engineering Manager. Oversee and track the prototype process of the project through the shop and testing activities per internal and external customer requirements.
  • Maintain project schedules to ensure timely completion.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools.
  • Demonstrate experience on a Solid Modeling CAD system preferably SolidWorks, along with Product Data Management (PDM).


Things we consider a plus:

  • 4-6 years of experience preferred.
