Full-Time Regulatory Counsel

The Good Food Institute – Posted by ChrisH Washington, District of Columbia, United States

Job Description

Using law and regulatory policy to transform the food system

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is at the forefront of the movement to use food technology and markets to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, from climate change and global hunger to antibiotic resistance and the exploitation of billions of animals annually.

How You Will Make a Difference
In this role, you will work to level the playing field for alternative proteins — particularly cultivated meat — across the world. The Regulatory Counsel will be responsible for:

  • Advocating for a clear and efficient regulatory path for cultivated meat in the United States and other countries.
  • Working with the Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs and GFI’s affiliates around the world to develop strategies to advance the regulation of alternative protein.
  • Writing letters, comments, policy briefs, and fact sheets to support GFI’s policy priorities.
  • Drafting submissions to regulators and analyzing regulatory proposals.
  • Cultivating relationships with other nonprofit organizations, especially those with a global outlook, to build alliances and support for the policies that will be most effective in increasing plant-based food options and readying the path to market for cultivated meat and the products of precision fermentation (such as dairy proteins produced by fermentation).
  • Speaking publicly on the benefits and regulation of alternative proteins.
  • Working collaboratively with the GFI team on regulatory filings (petitions, comments, etc.) and other documents.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Who We’re Looking For
The Regulatory Counsel must have:

  • A J.D. and a minimum of three years’ policy or legal experience.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Self-motivation and a strong work ethic.
  • Strong persuasive and analytical legal writing skills.
  • Experience in coalition-building and developing consensus among partners with different but complementary objectives.
  • The ability to communicate complex information clearly in writing and in oral presentations to a range of audiences.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Sound judgment in decision-making, including setting and managing priorities, proposing and meeting deadlines, and resolving logistic challenges.
  • Support for GFI’s philosophy and an ability to advocate professionally for GFI’s positions.
  • Comfort working in a rapidly growing and evolving organization.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • A degree in public health, biology, political science, or a related field.
  • Experience working on law or policy in a country outside of the United States.

We want the best people and we don’t want biases holding us back. We strongly encourage people of every color, orientation, age, gender, origin, and ability to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.
