Full-Time R&D Physicist

Job Description


The R&D Physicist position is based at our corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale CA. In this role you will be involved in research and development projects related to the CyberKnife treatment delivery system, although there will be opportunities to contribute to projects for the Radixact treatment delivery system, Precision treatment planning system, IDMS database, and various QA tools/software; you will be a key contributor to the product development of cutting-edge and best in class radiotherapy products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop both new and refined products and techniques for the improved therapeutic use of ionizing radiation. This work may involve device features, commissioning, QA, treatment planning, or associated tools and procedures

  • Develop product requirements, testing methods, usage policies, and training manuals to ensure the safe and effective design and operation of new products

  • Participate in formal product development testing as a Physics subject matter expert by executing tests of radiation beam characteristics, image quality, radiation safety, dose delivery/calculation accuracy, and clinical/QA workflow design

  • Provide physics support to other departments, including engineering, manufacturing, customer support (technical, clinical, and physics support teams), product marketing, and regulatory affairs

  • Collaborate with clinical medical physicists, both internally and externally, on research projects and publications related to radiation therapy

  • Maintain professional contact with peers and remain abreast of state-of-the-art technology and clinical practice through attendance at professional meetings and related activities

  • Ensure adherence to technical regulatory requirements


a. Required

  • MS in Medical Physics and at least 2 years subsequent clinical experience in radiation oncology or research/development experience in academia/industry. If the experience pertains to the CyberKnife system, a shorter period of experience would be acceptable

  • Hands-on experience with radiation production, measurement, dosimetry, data analysis, or modeling systems. Examples include: Particle accelerators, radiation dosimetry equipment and techniques, X-ray imaging technology, software tools (e.g. Matlab, Monte Carlo codes such as EGS4, clinical treatment planning systems)

  • A creative and flexible approach to technical problem solving with a keen eye for detail

  • The ability to work effectively as part of a small but diverse team including physicists, other scientists and engineers, in a fast-paced environment and with multiple projects

  • The ability to develop a work plan including methods, deliverables, timescales, and resources and complete the plan to schedule

  • The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, at a variety of technical levels

  • The ability to quickly assimilate new technologies and provide technical guidance and leadership to professional personnel

  • Willing to learn medical device regulations and work in an ISO-9000 regulated environment

  • 5% – 15% travel, including some international travel under normal travel considerations

b. Preferred or Desired

  • Ph.D. in Medical Physics or Physics

  • Clinical or academic experience using the CyberKnife System

  • Experience in the medical device industry, particularly the radiation therapy segment
