Full-Time Public Programs Manager

Job Description

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking a dedicated Public Programs Manager to develop and manage our adult programs (including lectures, classes, evening programs) and staff-lead floor programming for the Museum’s Education department.

The Public Programs Manager works collaboratively with the Museum’s Engagement and Education division and Museum scientists to create mission aligned and revenue generating adult programs that encourage lifelong learning. The position develops partnerships from a broad base of arts organizations, individual artists, makers, university extension, science affinity groups, and community groups to build on overlapping interests and shared passions.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop, manage, and facilitate ongoing public programs for adult audiences, including lectures; symposiums; large-scale events; and natural history classes and workshops.
  • Act as the project manager for summer Nat at Night programming—plan and work with staff to facilitate weekly trivia and additional Nat at Night program activities.
  • Plan and oversee budget, training, promotion and oversight of staff-lead floor programming, including Nature Studio art program on Saturdays (September-May).
  • Develop partnerships from a broad base of arts organizations, individual artists, makers, university extension, science affinity groups, and community groups to build on overlapping interests and shared passions. Actively promote public programs with networks and stakeholders.
  • Vet and recruit internal and external stakeholders for program offerings.
  • Establish forecasted programming plans and collateral in partnership with the Marketing Department (3-12 months in advance of program delivery).
  • Manage, develop and track budgets and purchase requests for all Public Programs.
  • Work with A/V department to facilitate all technical needs for programs, and to live-stream live and online programs.
  • Schedule and oversee part-time educators working on Public Programs.
    • Actively participate in relevant Museum and Park-wide committees.
    • Work with Institutional Advancement to develop proposals and reports for funding, including grants, foundation and sponsorship materials for all programs.
    • Work closely with the Marketing department on web content and social media content.
    • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BA or BS in education, natural sciences, or other related subject and 2+ years of experience developing and managing educational programs.
OR
  • 3+ years of equivalent work experience.
  • Successful experience managing revenue-based programming.
  • Prior experience in an informal education setting.
  • Shows creative initiative in program development.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Spanish speaking/bi-lingual (highly desired)
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and ability to effectively work with a diverse range of people.
  • This is a full-time (non-exempt) hourly position with benefits. Work hours are 5 days a week (Tuesdays – Saturdays) and includes evenings and weekends on program nights.

Pay rate: $22.60 per hour
