Endowed Chair in Documentary Studies and Production

The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) at the University of Oregon (UO) is proud to announce a position for a tenured Professor as the inaugural holder of an endowed chair in Documentary Studies and Production. This hire will join a nationally recognized school that emphasizes critical thinking, in depth reporting and representation, media literacy, experiential learning, and a commitment to social progress and diversity.

The successful candidate will be a high-level film documentary professional who can also teach documentary concepts and principles at the intersections of documentary theory, documentary production, journalism, and media and cinema studies, with an overall emphasis on the latest directions in non-fiction storytelling. The new colleague should be poised to teach documentary production and non-fiction storytelling across media platforms.
In addition, we look for candidates who can contribute to teaching documentary history and theory and who can help develop new coursework that enhances our journalism and media studies curricula, as well as the cinema studies curriculum. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to inclusive pedagogy and respect for diverse viewpoints in classroom instruction, offer a working knowledge of legal and ethical issues affecting documentary film/video, and support critical analysis of audiovisual communication and its impact on society.
Department or Program Summary
The School of Journalism and Communication is an ACEJMC-accredited program with a century-long history at the University of Oregon, which is a comprehensive research university and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Our program thrives as a journalism and communication school known for innovation, ethics, and action. We offer four undergraduate concentrations (in Advertising, Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations), four professional and academic master’s programs, and a doctoral program in Media Studies.
Minimum Requirements
Terminal degree (M.A., M.F.A. or PhD.)
Prior university-level teaching or evidence of ability to teach at the university level
A distinguished record of high-level documentary work befitting an incoming endowed chair and professor
A commitment to support the University’s emphasis on academic excellence in a culturally diverse environment is critical
Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching at the graduate level
