Full-Time Production Designer

Job Description

As Production Designer for The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat), you’ll play a critical role in shaping the design aesthetic and assisting in external communications for one of San Diego’s most popular and loved cultural attractions.  

The Production Designer is part of the Marketing and Communications team, and interfaces with clients across the organization. This person concepts, designs, develops, and implements print, digital or video related marketing materials and communications that support and reinforce our brand. The Production Designer focuses on digital and traditional design and production, along with some work in exhibition graphic design.  

Part designer, part production pro, part detail wrangler, and overall problem-solver–the ideal candidate can nimbly move between design and digital projects with strong communication and customer service, impeccable attention to detail, the ability to represent the brand by executing designs based on established style guides, and the commitment to work successfully as a part of a diverse team. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Execute design, layout, and production for the organization’s graphics needs, including:  
    • Advertising and marketing collateral: Traditional and digital advertising, print collateral stationery, and brochures/publications.  
    • On-site graphics: Posters, banners, and operational signage   
    • Digital media/multimedia: Social media, website, and email marketing graphics and templates   
  • Support the Art Director and Exhibits team with production of exhibition components where needed (panels and labels, etc.). 
  • Participate in marketing strategy discussions and have high-level understanding of the organization’s graphics standards, techniques, and methods. 
  • Assist Art Director with print production (obtaining estimates, developing production schedules, tracking and trafficking project through completion).  
  • E-newsletter design, programming, and management   
  • Create and update website pages for various departments, adhering to industry best practices 
  • Video-editing and production support 

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Expertise in Adobe suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and Premier Pro   
  • Experience in front-end design for web and mobile as well as content management systems and email marketing platforms such as MailChimp 
  • Pre-print set up and production design 
  • Excellent ability to shift between multiple projects with overlapping timelines 
  • Writing and copyediting experience a plus 
  • Creative and critical thinking capabilities, prioritization and troubleshooting skills 
  • Must be able to take direction and give clear feedback 
  • Knowledge of internal ticketing systems and/or project management software such as Slack, Asana, etc. is a plus. 
  • 2-4 years of production or visual design experience 
  • B.A. in art/design or 4 years of equivalent design or production experience

Pay: Salary is $23.84/hour. 

This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position with benefits such as health insurance, vacation, 15 paid holidays, free admission into all of Balboa Park’s museums as well as free admission to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park.
