Your role

The National is looking for a Producer of News Content to join a dynamic team of journalists for 3 months during the summer.

You will be part of the team that shapes and crafts CBC’s flagship newscast. This role is key to delivering on The National’s mandate to make, break and drive news that reflects and is relevant to new, younger and diverse audiences.

You are well suited for this role if you see yourself as an editorial leader who brings a creative flair to broadcast writing, innovatively working with video to create memorable moments for the audience across platforms.

You are definitely a self-starter, with a proven track record of working with reporters to develop, craft and vet network news stories. You live and breathe domestic and international news. You know how to frame stories to make them responsive and relevant. You have proven experience writing engaging promos with swagger that retain and grow your audience.

Experience taking live network TV news programs and breaking news to air in the control room is an asset.

One thing that’s a must is bringing a distinctive life experience, perspective or expertise to the team that will enrich The National’s content.

You must also have a deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience. You consider yourself to be a strategic thinker who can make immediate decisions in a complex and stressful environment.

You are available to work evenings – including late nights when necessary – and on Sundays in a compressed schedule.

You must also have a clear understanding of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Key Tasks:
Conceives and develops program ideas and concepts.
Develops the program content including assigning, researching, gathering, and/or editing.
Writes and produces host content for presentation in or out of the studio ensuring it meets program mandate and style.
Supervise the work of others who contribute to the program.
Selects, vets, re-writes and/or edits copy or text written by others.
Directs talent, sound and/or image.
Edits and mixes, or directs the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements.
Plans, organizes, coordinates and determines the style, pace, tempo, line-up and format of the program or the components and/or segments of a program, or program.
Lead execution of the on-air product in the control room including, as required, breaking news or special coverage.
Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by Management.
Evaluates all facets of a production including the performance of the program and production team and freelance contributors.
Participates in the preparation of program objectives.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
University degree or equivalent.
Minimum of five years of broadcast experience in a journalistic setting.
Experience pitching and producing stories and translating those ideas into on-air segments.
Track record of creativity and innovation with a strong attention to detail.
Proven chase skills.
Demonstrated expertise in writing and vetting for broadcast and writing of host scripts – and an ability to capture a conversational tone.
Demonstrated ability to use tape creatively – and write to it with flair.
Excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritize.
Demonstrated ability to produce content that can work on multiple platforms.
Embraces change and experimentation.
Independent, self-motivated combined with the ability to work well in a team environment.
Ability to work effectively in a high pressure environment and under tight, daily deadlines.
Must be able to solve problems quickly, independently and in-group discussions.
A team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Lives and promotes the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Strong knowledge and understanding of, and/or connection to underrepresented communities across Canada.
Demonstrates a deep understanding and appreciation of the different cultures, opinions and experiences that make up contemporary Canada (new, diverse, younger audience).
Elevates diverse perspectives, ideas and differing points of view.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods.
This is a compressed schedule. Must be available to work evenings, weekend evenings and long days and late nights.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
