Your role

CBC News Network is seeking a creative Lineup Producer with experience crafting high-impact network news programming for programming on the weekends. This role is key to delivering on News Network’s mission to prioritize live and breaking news that reflects – and is relevant to Canadians.
This role involves a compressed schedule with a Thursday to Sunday work week. Prior to each weekend in conjunction with your editorial colleagues you will be responsible for conceiving and creating various programming elements. This can include writing stories for broadcast, editing elements, creating graphics packages, and researching and booking potential interview subjects.

On Saturdays and Sundays you will be primarily responsible for managing the lineup, mapping out and producing various presentation elements, and coordinating with the Coverage and Senior Producers. You are also expected to guide writers, chase producers, crews and directors to achieve the stated mandate. You must be a proven creative editorial leader with experience in television news, with a track record of identifying and executing original programming approaches such as visual story treatments and elements. You come armed with knowledge of current trends in news programming – on television and on digital platforms – as well as emerging tools and technology. You will bring a distinctive life experience, perspective or expertise to the team that will enrich News Network’s content. You have a deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience. You must also have a clear understanding of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You must be a strategic thinker who can make immediate decisions in a complex and stressful environment.

Please note, that this is a one-year temporary position.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

A University degree or equivalent.
Five (5) years of experience of which three must involve work in a broadcast news environment.
Experience in pitching stories and translating those ideas into on-air segments.
Excellent writing, vetting and production skills.
A team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent eye and ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
Must be capable of original and creative thought in the production of television news.
Demonstrated news judgment and ability to work in a high pressure environment under tight deadline conditions.
Demonstrated team leader with solid people skills who can direct, perform and delegate assignments across editorial, production and technical lines.
Experience in a live control room under pressures of a changing lineup or breaking news.
Experience using Vizrt, iNews and Media Central.
Must be able to solve problems quickly, independently and in-group discussions.
Ability to perform other producer roles in the newsroom.
Embraces change and experimentation.
Lives and promotes the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Strong knowledge and understanding of, and/or connection to underrepresented communities across Canada.
Demonstrates a deep understanding and appreciation of the different cultures, opinions and experiences that make up contemporary Canada (new, diverse, younger audience).
Elevates diverse perspectives, ideas and differing points of view.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods. Must be available to work evenings, weekend evenings and long days and late nights.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
