Prevention Training Specialist, TransConnections (Long Beach)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, TransConnections, the Prevention Training Specialist will help develop, implement, monitor and evaluate all approaches used to recruit and retain young (18-29) Transgender Persons of Color (TG POC) for youth related programming. The Prevention Training Specialist will strategically utilize social media and assist in the development of social marketing campaigns for the purposes of engaging the target population. The Prevention Training Specialist will assist with the healthcare linkage and navigation for HIV positive young (18-29) TG POC). The Prevention Training Specialist also ensures the effective and timely development and implementation of HIV risk reduction programs and health education activities targeting TG POC, emphasizing cultural responsiveness in the development and implementation of the prevention intervention targeting young (18-29) TG POC.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit members of the target population to participate in in health education activities, including but not limited to, HIV testing.
  • Monitor, update, and sustain program visibility on all social media platforms.
  • Provide health education activities to members of the target population.
  • Facilitate training and workshops to members of the target population. Trainings/workshops may include HIV/STD 101, PrEP 101, TasP, U=U, communication skills, identifying available resources, and other related health education areas.
  • Coordinate the design and layout of collateral materials supporting prevention activities, including but not limited to; program flyers, publicity campaigns, monthly calendars and other materials as needed.
  • Gather and update data for the Referral Network, which will provide target populations and other community stakeholders with links to housing, substance abuse and mental health and other needed
  • Develop and implement a community mobilization plan targeting outreach venues.
  • Assist the Program Coordinator in the development and implementation of community forums and workshops.
  • Work with stakeholders and APLA’s community partners, including the Transgender community, mental health providers, substance abuse counselors, treatment centers, Los Angeles County Department of HIV and STD Programs, and other community-based agencies, in facilitating HIV prevention efforts as well as other health education activities, harm reduction strategies, and establishing linkages. Foster partnerships between these stakeholders.
  • Develop relationships with HIV service agencies throughout Los Angeles County that would best assist the target population.
  • Assist in the dissemination of lessons learned by developing and submitting abstracts for presentations at professional meetings and conferences and presenting at community forums.
  • Ensure culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
  • Prepare quantitative and qualitative reports as assigned.
  • Serve as speaker/facilitator for trainings.
  • Attend community/public meetings as necessary.
  • Provides counseling and rapid HIV testing to clients seeking those services.
  • Maintain HIV/STD testing records to ensure that all documentation required by funders and agency Quality Management Plan is on file.

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Training and Experience:

Associate’s degree in human services related field OR two years of experience working in the HIV field or health education. At least two years’ experience working with young African American and Latino youth and have extensive knowledge of psychosocial issues related to the HIV continuum is preferred.

 

Successful completion of LA County’s Division of HIV and STD Programs’ HIV Test Counselor Certification required. Experience working in a nonprofit environment preferred; specific training/experience with HIV/AIDS-related issues preferred.

 

Knowledge of:

Spectrum of HIV and STD disease; harm reduction theory; behavior modification theory; human sexuality, substance use and abuse, motivational interviewing techniques; effective communication skills; prevention theory and techniques; psychosocial and mental health factors affecting quality of life; outreach strategies; data management; health and social concerns of diverse populations of young Transgender persons particularly those from communities of color; PEP and PrEP; HIV/STD risk reduction theory; principles of social marketing; and venues where the target population congregates, including the Internet.

 

Ability to:

Work independently; create referral sources; familiarity with the Transgender community, work effectively with a diverse group of staff, volunteers and professionals; work effectively with a diverse group of community stakeholders who may hold a wide range of opinions on Transgender persons; organize stakeholders and engage community building and establish linkages between stakeholders; identify particular goals and objectives with respect to harm reduction; meet frequent, sometimes conflicting deadlines in a rapidly changing environment; respond with sensitivity to social inequities and diverse ethnic groups; maintain confidentiality; link participants into healthcare; navigate participants through the healthcare system; engage participants and encourage HIV testing; PrEP/PEP and TasP.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is primarily an office position that requires only occasional bending, reaching, stooping, lifting and moving of office materials weighing 25 pounds or less. The position requires daily use of a personal computer and requires entering, viewing, and revising text and graphics on the computer terminal and on paper. Local travel (within LA County) is required.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess a valid California driver’s license; proof of auto liability insurance; and have the use of a personal vehicle for work related purposes.
