Department summary

The Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta enrolls approximately 525 JD students and operates a robust graduate program. Alumni include the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, leading judges, academics and lawyers.

The Health Law Institute (HLI) is a leading and internationally recognized research institute within the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. In addition to conducting innovative health and science policy research, the HLI is renowned for broad dissemination of scholarly outputs, significant contributions to national and international policy development, and public engagement and training of graduate and postgraduate students, including many who have become leading scholars in the fields of health law and science policy studies.

Position summary

One Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) position jointly hosted by the Faculty of Law and the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta. The successful candidate will work on a project funded by the Stem Cell Network (SCN), a Canadian not-for-profit organization that supports research, training, and knowledge mobilization and transfer in the fields of stem cell and regenerative medicine research.

The main objective of the project is to map and analyze global laws, regulations and policies for clinical translation and market authorization of regenerative medicine products and therapies, with special emphasis of identifying strengths, weaknesses, gaps, and issues that impede ethical, globally-inclusive and effective regulation.

The PDF will be an active member of the HLI and also join the SCN Training Program. The Program provides specialized training that equips trainees with skills to pursue a variety of careers in academia and industry. The PDF will work directly with and under the supervision of Dr. Ubaka Ogbogu. The focus of the position is train the successful candidate to join the next generation of scholars examining the legal, ethical and social implications of cutting-edge biomedical research and associated technologies. The PDF will be offered a supportive environment that emphasizes skills acquisition and enhancement, multidisciplinary research, a robust publication record in academic and lay publications, critical and innovative thinking, independent and collaborative work, knowledge dissemination and public engagement, and networking skills.

Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent degree in any discipline, an excellent academic record, the beginning of a publication record, strong writing and research skills (expertise and/or experience in law and policy research will be considered an asset), and a primary interest in pursuing an academic career in a field related to the focus of this project, such as health law, science and technology studies, bioethics, public health, ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) research, global health, etc.

This full-time position is available for a period of two years starting from July 1, 2022 (with possibility of extension for an additional six months). Salary will be commensurate with experience and skills. The minimum salary for the position is $40,000 per annum. The position will remain open until filled. Duties:

• Conducting research

• Drafting and preparing academic and non-academic publications

• Supervising research assistants

• Presenting research outputs to academic and lay audiences

• Project management, including organizing workshops and meetings, liasing with project co-investigators and collaborators and preparing progress reports
