Salary: $70,000-75,000

About T1International USA
T1International is a non-profit run by people with and impacted by type 1 diabetes for people with type 1 diabetes, founded in the UK in 2013. We do not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry or any medical device manufacturer to maintain our independence and ability to speak out freely.

T1International is leading the charge in the fight for affordable insulin and supplies worldwide. We believe in a world where everyone with type 1 diabetes has the opportunity to thrive, with affordable and sustainable access to the medicine and supplies they need. We are an international organization, founded in the UK.

In 2019, we became a registered 501(c)(3). T1International USA is a financially independent organization but works as a subdivision of T1International. All macro-level strategy and leadership is led by the global T1International team. T1International and T1International USA are both purely remote teams, with staff throughout the United States and abroad.

About the role
The central role of Policy & Advocacy Director is to oversee federal legislation related to diabetes and insulin pricing, and to ensure that T1International USA volunteer advocates are supported throughout the USA to engage with legislation and policy. The Policy & Advocacy Director will represent T1International USA at relevant meetings, conferences, hearings, and activities and will work with patient advocates to ensure they are represented as well. The role will also include partnerships management along with other members of the T1International USA team.

The patient communities that T1International USA works with are fierce and dedicated, but many have never engaged in advocacy before getting involved with T1International USA. Therefore, the Policy & Advocacy Director will be responsible for using excellent communication skills to mobilize volunteers and continue building the USA #insulin4all movement, specifically in Washington D.C. The Policy & Advocacy Director will also be expected to take several domestic trips throughout the year to represent T1International USA.

Responsibilities
Attend, take part in and contribute to hearings, meetings, and other activities related to insulin and drug pricing policy in the USA, representing T1International USA and the type 1 diabetes community
Analyze bills, communicating their key points and impact on the type 1 diabetes community
Prepare content (resources, policy briefs, talking points) for Chapters and legislators with the T1International USA team
Meet with stakeholders (including lawmakers and staff) and attend events and other activities related to USA insulin and drug pricing policy
Communicate regularly with supporters, contacts, the media, and politicians, building understanding of the T1International USA patient community and growing support for the organization
Build partnerships with other organizations, getting the most out of the relationships and ensuring mutual understanding and objectives in each collaboration
Understand and continually learn about the needs of the community to build capacity and create strong relationships
Plan, coordinate, and implement effective outreach and organizing strategies for assigned projects; create work plans and outreach plans as requested by the Executive Director (ED)

About you
Has a passion for patient issues and the need to bring the patient voice to the forefront
Has a proven track record in at least some of the following: type 1 diabetes, advocacy, global health, access to medicines, non-communicable diseases, drug pricing policy and movements, legislation and policy analysis, the non-profit sector, community/grassroots organizing
Has existing knowledge, and is willing to put in the time and effort to gain a full understanding, of the American and global insulin landscape (including insulin pricing issues, legal and political drug pricing issues, the pharmaceutical industry, diabetes organizations within the space, etc.)
Has a full understanding of T1International USA’s mission, vision and approach to sustainable change
Is able to understand big-picture issues as well as specifics of policy to participate in high-level meetings and hearings
Has extremely strong organizational skills, both on and offline, and pays great attention to detail
Demonstrates strong stakeholder management skills, particularly at the federal level
Is able to prioritize, work independently with deadlines and weekly goals, think critically, and problem-solve with good, independent judgement
Works effectively as a member of a team and communicates to resolve any conflict or confusion
Is fluent in English (written and oral); other language skills desirable
Excels with Microsoft Office tools, Google Drive, and online communication platforms

About the role
This is a full time position
T1International USA is a purely remote team; all staff are home-based, but a regular presence in Washington D.C. is needed for this role
The Executive Director is in the UK, but the US team will be working normal US work hours, with some flexibility based on location to ensure the majority of hours overlap with other staff
The work requires some amount of flexibility as it will occasionally require work on weekends and weeknights, as well as domestic travel
