In addition to our talented environmental lawyers and legislative advocates, we have an amazing communications department that works in strategic partnership with every department in our organization.

We are looking for a skilled and passionate photo editor. This person will help ensure meaningful and beautiful photography by understanding stories and then curating and editing visuals to complement those stories. They will source and license photos from existing sources. They will work with writers, subjects, and contractors to set up shoots. They will manage and art direct a national network of freelance photographers. This person should have a passion for creativity and visual storytelling. They will help tell the story of our work and the people and places impacted by that work. The images they work on will be used to support campaign advocacy, institutional marketing, press outreach, public education, and fundraising. This person is the primary source of photographic work at Earthjustice. It spans the entire organization and, while decision making is often done in collaboration with others, it involves a great deal of autonomy in execution.This position is managed by the Managing Producer.

Responsibilities:

Photography Editing (70%)

  • Organize, execute and edit photography for Earthjustice’s advocacy campaigns, press outreach, institutional marketing and fundraising/donor cultivation. This involves photographic coverage for the website, quarterly magazine, annual report, the programmatic team, and fundraising team.
  • Lead photo pre-production: brainstorming ideas, researching stories, researching photographers and photography sources.
  • Lead in photo licensing: find and license best photos available from photographers and/or wire services to visually tell stories.
  • Lead photo production: hire, contract, manage and art direct photographers. Also, work with subjects and photographers to set up shoots
  • Lead photographic post-production: culling and editing photographs, distributing multiple formats, archiving and organizing footage.
  • Serve as a photo researcher for the Instagram account and other social media platforms.
  • Stay well-informed about Earthjustice issues and priorities in order to make proactive recommendations about visual storytelling opportunities.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and applications, and work with the web, program and marketing teams to determine appropriate implementation.

Admin (30%)

  • Manage Earthjustice’s photo and video database, including managing the metadata for a growing set of 20,000 assets
  • Train staff members in various photography editing skills such as finding and hiring photographers, licensing photos, photo ethics, etc.
  • Take part in Creative and Communications team meetings for strategy development, project brainstorming, debriefs, etc.

Qualifications: 

  • BA or higher degree. The ideal candidate would have an advanced degree in multimedia journalism or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years applied experience with photo and multimedia story creation online and print
  • Love of photography, visual storytelling and enabling others to make great photographs
  • 7+ years of experience working as a photo editor
  • Photo editing using software including the following: Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge Additional software ability in Premiere Pro, After Effects, InDesign, Audition is a bonus
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, subjects, and contractors
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage production for multiple projects, some requiring immediate response and others planned for the longer term
  • Ability to manage project budgets and contractors
  • Ability to supervise and art-direct freelance photographers and videographers
  • Familiarity with and interest in environmental issues
  • Excited about learning new skills and adaptable to new ways of doing things
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations
  • Contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences

Travel
This position requires some travel within the U.S.

Salary is based on experience and location. 
Salary range in San Francisco, CA: $87,300 – $97,000
