Full-Time Payroll Specialist

Thompson Coburn, a large full-service law firm with offices in seven (7) cities across the U.S., is looking for a Payroll Specialist to fill a full-time non-exempt position in its St. Louis office. With over 400 attorneys and experience in 50 areas of law, Thompson Coburn is regularly recognized for its commitment to diversity and for providing clients with outstanding value and service. Qualified applicants will have a minimum of two (2) years of payroll experience. You will succeed in this role if you have excellent attention to detail and analytical skills. Prior experience with UKG Dimensions and/or UKG Pro and an Associate degree is preferred. The candidate selected for this position must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. After an initial period of in-office training, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
Job Responsibilities 
  • Utilizes payroll and timekeeping systems to perform end to end payroll processing, including compliance, reconciliations, reasonableness, manual calculations and adjustments, tax filings, involuntary and voluntary payroll deductions.
  • Supports and maintains all payroll processes, including but not limited to data stored and utilized within the payroll and timekeeping systems.
  • Documents, updates and communicates procedures, known issues or workarounds to users as well as provides general user support for timekeeping and payroll process.
  • Researches and resolves payroll related problems/issues.
  • Assists with compliance with TC policy, relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Assists with month-end, quarter-end and year-end processes including reconciliations and filings.
  • Responds to ad hoc payroll related requests including but not limited to surveys, research projects and other special projects as assigned.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, benchmarking state-of-the-art practices and participating in professional organizations.
  • Works with Payroll Manager and Controller in identifying payroll and timekeeping trends and proactively seeks ways to improve current processes and maximize efficiency within the payroll and human resource groups.
Job Requirements 
  • Must possess a high level of professionalism, poise and interpersonal skills so as to be able to work well with attorneys and employees at all levels within the organization and maintain all information in the strictest of confidence.  Required to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others.
  • Must possess strong collaboration skills to successfully work with other individuals and departments to enhance the entire organization.
  • Must have ability to read, write and communicate fluent English; ability to compose documents in the appropriate business style using correct grammar and spelling; ability to communicate clearly using proper grammar and diction over the telephone.
  • Must possess attention to detail, follow-through and have strong time management skills in a sometimes fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.
  • Must have ability to reason and apply common-sense understanding to situations encountered.
  • Ability to process routine daily functions while being able to resolve sensitive issues and complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills.
  • Must be adept at collecting information through advanced communication, questioning and interviewing techniques.
  • Must possess strong reasoning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have ability to work overtime as needed.
  • The physical demands of this position are representative of those that must be met by an employee in order for him or her to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.  These include being both mobile and stationary throughout the workday, having the ability to transport 25 (twenty-five) pounds and being able to operate a computer and other business equipment found in the office.
