Updated by Board of Trustees on December 15, 2009
Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are
celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs
and demonstrations of environmental stewardship.

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. In FY19, the Garden served over 250,000 visitors, including 32,000 schoolchildren, and 48,215 through outreach efforts offsite. A recently completed visitor survey reveals that 45% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of people who live in and visit one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet.
The Education Department at Queens Botanical Garden offers public events, school workshops and teacher training programs throughout the year following QBG’s mission of cultural connection to plants and ecological sustainability. The Garden seeks Outreach Instructors to fulfill our after school program teaching needs January through June. Selected candidates will be assigned to conduct 2-3 afternoon classes throughout the Queens community. Additional morning work may also be available.
Responsibilities:
• Teach programming to the standards set by QBG
• Prepare and maintain all materials for scheduled programs
• Set up and breakdown classrooms
• Travel to and from Queens area schools
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, science or a related field.
• Two years related experience
• Class management experience in subject areas of botany, environmental studies, ethnobotany or life sciences
• Experience and sensitivity working with various populations
• Must be able to work with large groups of children
• Outgoing personality and enthusiastic attitude
• Excellent communication and organizational abilities
• Ability to commit to two or more afternoon programs per week.
Driver’s license, access to a vehicle and/or Department of Education fingerprinting, a plus.
Upon conclusion of the Garden’s after school programming season, Outreach Instructors may be asked to continue their service at QBG as a long-term part-time Instructor. Opportunities available to Instructors may include classes, workshops, tours, public programs and special events on Garden grounds or at local schools, community facilities, neighborhood festivals, etc. These programs cater to groups of all ages and occur on weekends, weekdays and evenings.
