Full-Time Outreach Coordinator/ Biological Technician

Job Description

In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, we are seeking in intern who will develop outreach materials such as social media posts, press releases, story maps, and field notes, update existing outreach materials and manuals, and participate in virtual and/or in-person outreach events. The Intern will also conduct field surveys in various coastal and upland locations on Long Island and New York City for federally listed species including piping plover, roseate tern, red knot, seabeach amaranth, and the at-risk salt marsh sparrow. Working in conjunction with biologists, the Intern will also collect information on physical and biological characteristics of federal permit application and development projects. They will also be responsible for installing symbolic fencing and predator exclosures for federally listed shorebird and plant species. The intern will also interact with beach users to explain federally listed species biology and management while recording human disturbance to these species.

This is a full-time, paid, one-year AmeriCorps placement through Conservation Legacy’s Environmental Stewards program with the potential for term extension up to another full year. The ideal candidate would have a bachelor’s degree in biology or communications, media arts, writing, or a related area of study, and an interest in environmental outreach and conservation. This is not just an internship, but an opportunity for someone who is prepared to take initiative and who is eager to learn about and develop communication strategies to increase public awareness of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conservation efforts at the Long Island Field Office (LIFO) with support for the New York Field Office (NYFO). The position is located in Shirley, NY, with field work occurring throughout Long Island and New York City. Some limited telework may be permitted on an as-needed basis.


Required Skills
