Full-Time Officer, University Community

Job Description

Position Overview:

Solve is seeking a Community Officer to focus on institutional university relationships. The Officer will play a key role in deepening and expanding Solve’s engagement with the MIT community, as well as other university members of Solve. They will support recruitment of and relations with exceptional leaders from academic programs whose expertise and interests align with Solve’s mission of tackling pressing global challenges through open innovation and partnerships. In consultation with colleagues on Solve’s Community Team, they will develop new partnerships with departments, labs, centers, and initiatives across MIT, seeking to engage undergraduate & graduate students, faculty, and staff in connection with Solve’s annual Challenges and broader work.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

  • Serve as primary liaison to MIT programs and initiatives to understand their work and where Solve’s global community can support or engage them.
  • Identify, pilot, plan and implement programs to engage MIT students in Solve activities, including internships, externships, challenge design, challenge promotion and interaction with Solver teams.
  • Raise a prize earmarked to students who take part in Solve’s yearly global challenges.
  • Work with Solve leadership to develop engagement for MIT faculty, researchers and staff, including the management of convening of faculty advisors to Solve.
  • Recruit, manage and retain a network of academic institutions to create a relevant community of excellence made of diverse global leaders from high-quality institutions of higher education.
  • Broker partnerships between Solver teams and Solve Community leaders and create partnerships to advance the growth of selected solutions.
  • Work with other team members as needed on planning and executing events that bring together the community physically and virtually to support Solver teams and solve the challenges.
  • Promote Solve Global Challenges across the Solve Community and extensive networks for targeted outreach to find the most promising Solver teams.


Supervision Received:

  • Support Managing Director as needed.

Supervision Exercised:

  • Manage volunteers and consultants as needed .


Qualifications & Skills:


  • Working understanding of the MIT community – a recent graduate from the institute is highly preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience, with at least 1 years’ experience managing relationships and partnerships
  • Highly developed organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, handling multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work in an efficient manner to meet deadlines
  • Must be flexible and able to work independently, take initiative and anticipate needs
  • Bachelor’s degree



  • Master’s degree in an area relevant to Solve’s work
  • Experience in social and/or environmental impact organization
  • Experience in sales or nonprofit development
  • Project management training or experience
