Job Description

The Indiana Chapter of The Nature Conservancy is seeking a Northwest Indiana Land Steward to join our network of land stewards working across the state to protect and restore critical lands and waters.  They will work as part of a team responsible for the operations, maintenance, restoration, and management of conservation areas across northwest Indiana, primarily in the Kankakee River Valley.

The Northwest Indiana Land Steward will lead seasonal work teams to ensure the coordination, community support, and implementation of preserve management plans. They will maintain preserve areas frequented by the visiting public; remove invasive species; conduct monitoring and research; and collect native seed.  The Land Steward also helps maintain tools, fleet vehicles, and equipment; operates heavy machinery; participates in the prescribed fire program; and maintains preserve records using a PC and mobile devices.

The ideal candidate will have a degree and related experience (or equivalent combination).  They should be able to work independently, operate and maintain heavy equipment; use common software applications; and communicate clearly.  They must be able to obtain related licenses and certifications, such as a driver’s license, herbicide/pesticide application, and Fire Fighter Type 2.

This is a full-time, hourly position supervised by the Indiana Fire Manager, and is based at the Kankakee Sands Office in Morocco, Indiana.  The compensation range begins at $41,300 and may be commensurate with experience.
