Job Description

YMCA DownsLink Group is a formation of local YMCAs across Sussex and Surrey. We are a charity working to transform the lives of vulnerable young people across Sussex and Surrey. We work to prevent youth homelessness and provide a home to 763 young people every night. We reach a further 10,000 young people and their families through our other key services, such as counselling, support and advice, mediation and youth work, so that all young people can belongcontribute and thrive.

The Team

Our services house 85 young people aged 16 to 25 across the city in high, medium, and low supported accommodation. The team work in a holistic manner, adopting a psychologically-informed approach to support young people to transition into independent living throughout Brighton & Hove. As a service, we provide a safe and caring environment for young people, with their aspirations and desires always at the forefront of the support we offer them.

The Role

We are are seeking a Night Support Worker to provide safe, secure accommodation for our young people who have been, or are at risk of, homelessness. The main aim is to ensure that the services are as safe, secure, quiet and welcoming as possible through the night. We offer space for young people to talk about issues that may be affecting them, and working within a boundaried, team approach. Any anti-social behaviour issues or incidents are approached with  empathy, compassion, clarity and a sense of priority.

The role involves alternating on a pattern between two 24-hour supported accommodation services, situated centrally within Brighton and Hove: Lansworth House and Gareth Stacey House. These sites offer high quality accommodation to 21 and 15 residents respectively, including large communal areas and garden spaces, providing opportunities for innovation in 1:1 support and group work activities. A substantial part of the role is to lone work and being able to prioritise tasks effectively. 

Expected working pattern: The position involves working on a 4 waking night shifts on, 4 waking shifts off rota pattern from 9.30pm to 8.30 am.

Who You Are

You will experienced in and/or passionate about working directly with young people aged 16-25 and able to engage and relate well to this age group. Be competent and confident when working alone, being able to understand and work with complex , challenging behaviour appropriatelyA capable communicator with the ability to engage, inspire, enhance learning and provoke thoughtful reflection. You will have an understanding of the key risks, challenges and opportunities for young people, including identifying risks and responding effectively to Safeguarding issues/incidents. Able to work well within a team approach, including keeping sound records and giving/receiving detailed handovers to ensure consistency and continuity of service and engaging well in supervision.
