ABOUT PHILIPSE MANOR HALL STATE HISTORIC SITE:

Owned and operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & and Historic Preservation, Philipse Manor Hall is one of the oldest buildings in New York. For nearly 350 years, Philipse Manor Hall has sat at the confluence of the Saw Mill and Hudson Rivers as Yonkers grew out of the vast landholdings of the Philipse family. The historic site is in the process of reopening to the public after undergoing extensive renovations and the installation of a groundbreaking new permanent exhibit, Our Whole History.

 

Our Whole History carefully studies the issues and events of the past and how they affect and shape the lives of all individuals. Through meticulous research of primary documents, archaeological records, and environmental sciences, the Our Whole History exhibit at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site explores the conflicting interests between the local Lunaape Munsee Native Americans, European Colonizers, and enslaved individuals of African descent.

 

As part of the site reopening, Philipse Manor Hall is seeking a team of skilled and enthusiastic staff who will welcome and assist our guests throughout the site.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Museum Guide is a part-time position with the New York Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. The Museum Guide is responsible for providing guided tours of Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site’s permanent exhibit and special walking tours of downtown Yonkers. The Museum Guide will be trained to provide tours for both the general public and school groups.

 

Primary Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Delivering visitor-first service in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Navigating visitor questions and concerns skillfully with a variety of visitors under a variety of circumstances.
  • Conducting daily historically-themed tours of the exhibit at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site. Tours will be about 45-50 minutes in length with two Museum Guides alternating tours at the beginning of each hour.
  • Leading outdoor walking tours of downtown Yonkers when scheduled.
  • Setting up and implementing educational programs under the guidance of the Interpretive Programs Assistant.
  • Helping to maintain the cleanliness of the grounds and facilities and reporting damages or concerns.
  • Assisting with other projects and duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.

 

OPERATIONAL NEEDS:

  • Must enjoy meeting and interacting with other people, including general public, staff, senior citizens, teachers, and children. Seeking candidates that are personable, outgoing, enthusiastic, reliable, flexible, and responsible.
  • Must be able to learn new material rapidly and be willing to discuss openly and honestly subject material that may be difficult or sensitive.
  • Must be able to work independently, as a team, or under the supervision of higher-level staff.
  • Must be able to speak comfortably before groups of people.
  • Must be able to lift or move up to 40lbs.
  • Must be able to stand/walk for long periods of time, climb stairs and ladders, bend, lift, and set up/take down displays and fixtures.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work both weekend and weekday hours and, on occasion, evenings for special events.
  • Related college coursework and/or a background in public speaking or working at historic sites, museums, and other related fields is preferred but not required.
  • Bi-lingual applicants preferred but not required.
