Full-Time Medical Billing Specialist

About the Position:
The Medical Billing/Accounts Receivable Specialist works as part of SLMH’s finance team to coordinate insurance company and client billing for mental health services provided, and ensure that all claims are correctly submitted for payment at recorded.   The majority of SLMH’s clients are on Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid), but SLMH also accepts numerous private insurance plans, and the Specialist would be working with a variety of insurances and payment methods. This is not a remote position.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that client insurance billing records are up to date and correct.
  • Prepare and submit claims files to insurance agencies, including verification of accuracy prior to submission.
  • Review and resolve rejections, denials, and errors.
  • Record and post payments and payment statuses in Electronic Medical Records and Claims system
  • Answer questions and address concerns regarding billing, copays and client responsibilities, insurance status and eligibility, and coding for clients, clinicians, and insurance companies.
  • As requested, produce reports and provide data on billing and billing status.
  • Collect overdue bills from clients and insurance agencies.
  • Complete special projects as requested.
  • Meet requirements regarding productivity and dependability.
  • Participate in team and departmental meetings.
  • Participate in completeness and quality reviews as required.
  • Engage in continuing education activities and trainings.
  • Represent the billing team in cross-team work-groups and committees, as requested.
  • Perform all duties in a respectful and responsible manner, both with clients and coworkers, and in a manner that meets all professional ethical standards.

 

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required, Associate or bachelor degree in finance or business administration a plus.
  • A minimum of two years of general medical billing office experience.
  • Experience working in a behavioral health environment and/or with Oregon Health Plan or Medicare billing preferred.
  • Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS) certification strongly preferred.

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of medical billing practices, particular for behavioral health services.
  • Excellent attention to detail, and ability to manipulate and process large amounts of data error-free.
  • Ability to balance clinical, cultural, and ethical values, particularly as relates to client and staff needs.
  • Must be able to resolve billing problems with clients in a trauma-informed communication style.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to interact positively with people of all ages and cultural background.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team environment.
  • Must have strong computer skills, including familiarity with medical billing/electronic medical records software (Carelogic and Claim MD), QuickBooks, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Bilingual a plus
