Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU), the world’s leading waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization, and its supporting organization, Wetlands America Trust, Inc. (WAT), one of the nation’s largest accredited land trusts, are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated individual to provide leadership, coordination, and administration for its lands program as part of a dynamic team of professionals located throughout the United States. DU is an accredited land trust with a portfolio of nearly 600 conservation easements conserving over 480,000 acres and a revolving fee title portfolio of over 25,000 acres.

 

The successful candidate will join DU’s talented and growing land protection team and will have the opportunity to participate in conservation efforts across some of the nation’s most coveted landscapes. The position works closely with national and regional lands program staff to facilitate fee title and conservation easement transactions and to steward DU/ WAT’s conservation easement portfolio. This position will be located at DU’s National Headquarters (NHQ) in Memphis, Tennessee.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as NHQ lead for DU’s lands program and manage the operations of a lands portfolio of over 500,000 acres of wetlands and associated habitat. The position is highly engaged with transactional components of land projects and supervises a team dedicated to easement and fee title transactions. The position also works closely with DU regional lands staff on the acquisition, disposition, and stewardship of fee title and easement projects.
  • Work with Conservation leadership to evaluate new business strategies and opportunities to scale DU’s lands program to (1) accelerate the pace of wetlands and grasslands conservation in the prairies and expand protected wetland complexes in priority migration and wintering landscapes using government / grant funding sources, (2) advance lands as an integral part of DU’s Sustainability Program, and (3) increase financial strength to elevate DU’s profile in land conservation and to maximize leverage of public revenue.
  • Collaborate with DU regional office lands staff on strategies to grow and develop DU’s lands program, including (but not limited to) leveraging external capital sources to support program objectives.
  • Manage the evaluation and prioritization of lands projects to ensure alignment with DU national objectives, priorities, and financial obligations. Evaluate project business plans and coordinate with regional offices and other DU departments on project financing needs.
  • Ensure DU’s policy and procedures are aligned with current best practices for land trusts, and state and federal laws. Provide input on land protection and stewardship endeavors, including new conservation easement language, conservation easement violation resolutions, etc.
  • Serve as a primary spokesperson for DU’s lands program to both internal and external audiences, and to staff and board leadership.

 

Qualifications:

  • Passion for land protection and habitat conservation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams of conservation partners, both internal and external, towards shared strategic goals.
  • Extensive experience with lands transactions and land financing mechanisms.
  • Ability to successfully work and interact with a broad range of partners including state, federal and NGO entities, and DU volunteers and major donors.
  • Knowledge of DU’s continental conservation activities as well as other aspects of the organization is desirable.
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree or law degree preferred, but not required) in applicable field and 7+ years of experience in business, finance, agricultural economics, natural resource conservation or a related discipline.
  • Successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills, work effectively within teams, and will be highly organized and detail oriented.
