The Opportunity

As Bottom Line, a national organization with three regions, continues to evolve, the need to shape fundraising strategy at the regional level has become more important. The New York region is entering our second decade of operations and we are positioning ourselves to serve 2,000 more students annually by 2026. To meet this goal, we must increase our annual operating budget by $2.8 million. The Managing Director of Development will play a critical role in this growth by leading our regional development strategy and, as a member of the Regional Leadership Team, building a strong team and culture steeped in development, sustainability, longevity, reliability, ambition and equity.

Your Day-to-Day

55% – Team Management & Leadership

You will build and develop a high-functioning team with an inclusive and intentional team culture aligned with Bottom Line’s efforts to become an antiracist, multicultural organization with clear commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. As a people leader, you will cultivate trusting relationships with your direct reports and across the region, inspiring, motivating and coaching them to execute on priorities and deliver results. You will adapt your coaching style, from technical to adaptive, to best support your team in reaching ambitious goals.

As a member of the Regional Leadership Team, you will contribute to building a strong culture across the NY Region, serving as an active member of an in-region committee and assuming leadership on key ad hoc projects. Through your role, you will lead the region on its journey to embody the equity and social justice principles of Community-Centric Fundraising.

25% – Driving Regional Fundraising Strategy

As MDD, you will lead Bottom Line’s local efforts in New York to engage stakeholders across the region in raising the funding and resources needed to achieve its mission.  By building strong short-to-medium term fundraising and communications strategies for the region, you will push the NY region toward FY26 revenue goals.

20% – Board Stewardship

In collaboration with the Executive Director, you will cultivate a diverse, active and engaged Board and Development Committee. As the primary development liaison for the NY Regional Advisory Board, you will engage board members directly in fundraising and individual giving initiatives, as well as support with board member recruitment, onboarding, and meeting coordination.

The Skills You’ll Need

Success in the Managing Director of Development role will require a deep commitment to Bottom Line’s mission, core values and commitments to DE&I, emotionally intelligent leadership, and a desire to cultivate long-lasting relationships. The ideal candidate will also bring the following skills, attributes and experiences:

  • Experience in a director-level development or fundraising role with demonstrable results for small-to-medium nonprofit organizations
  • Desire and ability to lead a small team, supporting their continued learning and development
  • Direct experience collaborating with nonprofit boards and/or board development committees
  • Experience creating and implementing short- and medium-term development strategy and managing multiple projects from ideation to implementation
  • Expertise in lead generation and the ability to yield large individual and/or institutional gifts
  • Knowledge of marketing and communication strategies to support fundraising efforts
  • Expertise in data management, monitoring fundraising metrics, and using data to guide decision making
  • (Preferred) Experience with Salesforce and Community-Centric Fundraising

The People

In this role you will report to the Executive Director of the NY Region, Shauwea Hamilton. You will have 2-3 direct reports including a Grants Manager. As the incoming MDD, you will create an effective team structure and continue growing the development team while supporting regional efforts as a member of the Regional Leadership Team.

The Managing Director will frequently collaborate with the NY Advisory Board Development Committee, the National External Affairs Team, and other regional development teams.

The Organization

Bottom Line is bridging the divide of educational inequity by providing a trusted advisor and the social capital necessary for our students to earn their bachelor’s degree, build financial stability, and successfully launch thriving careers. We primarily focus on students of color who will be in the first generation of their family to earn a college degree, are from low-income backgrounds, and are academically prepared for college.

For first-generation degree-aspiring students from low-income backgrounds who face systemic barriers, Bottom Line’s advisors are a relentless ally who partner with them to find the right college, persist to a degree, and successfully launch a career. We operate regional programs in Massachusetts, New York City, and Chicago that collectively serve over 7,000 students.
