Full-Time Manager, Media & Public Affairs (State Focus)

Job Description

The Media & Public Affairs Manager is responsible for advancing the mission of Share Our Strength and its campaigns, including No Kid Hungry, by creating and implementing media strategies that build support and awareness for national and state program and policy goals. The Manager will lead earned and paid media relations activities to support No Kid Hungry’s goal to end childhood hunger in America and Share Our Strength’s broader mission to end hunger and poverty.

This position can be based in Washington, DC or be fully remote for the right candidate, with expectations of travel to DC at least once a quarter.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Help develop and support state media relations activities to increase No Kid Hungry’s visibility with media and thought leaders across the country, building widespread issue awareness and driving public support for federal, state and local advocacy goals.
  • Develop creative pitches for state and local media in key states across the U.S. where No Kid Hungry is working to end childhood hunger.
  • Help execute earned media strategy in states across the country, positioning staff and local spokespersons as experts.
  • Support rapid-response efforts, connecting No Kid Hungry priorities and research to the daily news cycle.
  • Support state programmatic and advocacy goals through crafting of press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, blog posts, talking points, statements and other public-facing pieces in support of communications strategies.
  • Attend cross organizational meetings to ensure early alignment of PR tactics and programmatic priorities.
  • Monitor news coverage and compile quarterly reports.

CONTACTS

Has regular interaction with members of the Communications, Government Relations and Advocacy, Center for Best Practices, and Field teams, as well as state and local partners and stakeholder groups.

SUPERVISION

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office work environment and up to 10% travel.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field.
  • Hands-on experience working with media, including print, radio, and television reporters and producers.
  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills; ability to adapt technical language for lay audiences (e.g. policymakers, news media, volunteers, low-income families); understanding of when and how to use different channels of communication.
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities while coordinating work flow in a deadline-driven and service-focused environment.
  • Must be proactive and a self-starter with excellent problem-solving and implementation skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills, with ability to maintain strong professional relationships with a range of groups in-person and by writing and phone, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Google applications.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated interest in anti-hunger and anti-poverty issues.

FLSA CLASSIFICATION

This position is classified as exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is ineligible for overtime pay.
