Full-Time Manager, Media & Public Affairs (Federal Focus)

Job Description

The Media & Public Affairs Manager advances the mission of Share Our Strength and its campaigns addressing hunger and poverty by executing communications strategies that drive public support for our policy and programmatic priorities. The Associate will support the national communications strategies, helping to build and execute public affairs activities for federal legislative and national policy and advocacy-focused work for the organization. This position will report to the Associate Director of Media & Public Affairs.

This position can be based in Washington, DC or be fully remote for the right candidate, with expectations of travel to DC at least once a quarter.  This position will offer a range of $60,000-$70,000. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and geographic location.

Please note: Final Candidate(s) will be required to provide a writing sample. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Execute national communications strategies in support of organizational policy and programmatic priorities;
  • Develop national media pitches and pitches for key markets across the U.S. where Share Our Strength is working to end childhood hunger and address the root causes of poverty;
  • Help execute rapid-response efforts, connecting Share Our Strength priorities and research to the daily news cycle;
  • Create talking points, messaging and explainers that translate complicated policies into compelling and understandable messages and materials;
  • Pitch reporters, editors, producers and other members of the media and prep spokespeople for interviews
  • Partner with colleagues to support Share Our Strength’s work to be a diverse and inclusive organization, and ensuring this value is embedded in the organization and throughout our work.

CONTACTS:

Has regular interaction with members of the Communications, Marketing, Shared Support, Advocacy, Center for Best Practices and Field teams, as well as members of the press.

SUPERVISION:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal home office / office work environment with less than 10% travel. No heavy lifting required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public affairs, marketing, politics or related discipline preferred but not required;
  • 3-5 years’ experience;
  • Hands-on experience working with media, including print, radio and television reporters and producers;
  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills and ability to adapt technical language for lay audiences;
  • Understanding of when and how to use different channels of communication;
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities while coordinating workflow in a deadline-driven and service-focused environment;
  • Must be proactive and a self-starter with excellent problem-solving and implementation skills;
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills, with ability to maintain strong professional relationships with a range of groups in-person and by writing and phone, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Google applications;
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently;
  • Demonstrated interest in anti-hunger and anti-poverty issues.

FLSA CLASSIFICATION:

This position is classified as exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is (not) eligible for overtime pay.
