Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is recruiting a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Responsible for providing professional nursing care to patients via telephonic assessment and triage. Actively participates in coordination of patient flow and services within assigned area. Collects patient information related to patient visit or procedure. Assists with procedures and administers approved medication. Assists physician and team members with patient care, clerical, environmental and organizational tasks. Assists in optimizing education for residents and students in Program rotation.

Licensed Practical Nurse Starting and Retention Bonuses = $2,000, details of retention bonus will be discussed during interview process

Responsibilities

  • Assists with patient flow and room assignments.
  • Obtains age appropriate vital signs upon admission.
  • Collects patient information pertinent to physician visit or procedure.
  • Assists physicians and team with treatment, tests, and orders.
  • Performs waived testing.
  • Performs nursing procedures such as bladder catheterization, sterile dressing changes, etc…
  • Assist with surgical and invasive procedures that involve sterile technique.
  • Conducts patient/family education under the direction of an RN.
  • Administers medication as approved.
  • Documents patient care and actions per clinic standard.
  • Facilitates scheduling of diagnostic work-up, procedures and referrals.
  • Refers abnormal lab work to physician for appropriate follow up.
  • Calls in prescription refills or utilizes EHR refill process.
  • Prepares, maintains, and cleans exam rooms.
  • Maintains equipment; orders supplies as needed.
  • Discusses day to day issues with team leader for resolution.
  • Directs incoming calls to appropriate resource.
  • Maintains CEUs required by licensure/certification/registration.
  • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Specific phone triage responsibilities (As appropriate):

  •  Utilizes age specific protocol manuals designed for patient assessment.
  • Work with physicians or RNs to ensure safe and proper care for patients by performing telephonic patient assessment for all ages.
  • Documents call processing in the EMR and/or paper medical record.
  • Schedules urgent appointments and extended hours clinic appointments; may make or direct other
    appointments; all in accordance with scheduling guidelines.
  • Assists in continuity of patient care by proper transfer of patient information.
  • Participates in the revision and maintenance of protocol manuals and clinic specific scheduling guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited program.
  • Minimum one year experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in an outpatient environment desirable.
  • State of Michigan licensure as Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in EMR.
  • Ability to collect and document data from patients.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in waived testing.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in administering medications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Outlook.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
