About the Position:

The Legislative and Policy Director works with the Conservation Director, Executive Director, and Program Directors to envision, develop, and draft legislative and policy proposals that further the Grand Canyon Trust’s strategic efforts on the Colorado Plateau.  This is a new position at the Trust and will require a creative and independent person ready to develop strategies to support our existing conservation and advocacy work.

The position requires leadership, strategic and analytical thinking, advocacy, and interpersonal skills. The Legislative and Policy Director will advocate for legislation, policy, and regulatory changes at the federal, state, and tribal government level. Focus areas will include comprehensive Grand Canyon protection and co-management, national monument defense and co-management, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and a myriad of other issues.

Position Responsibilities:

Legislation and Policy 75%

• Collaborate with program staff to create, draft, develop, advocate for legislative, policy, and regulatory solutions that help achieve long-term goals in the Trust’s strategic plan.

• Identify and initiate strategies to achieve specified outcomes and respond to new challenges, with particular attention to Native perspectives.
• Support tribal sovereignty and implementation of co-management systems on the Colorado Plateau.
• Integrate justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives and strategies into the Legislation and Policy work plan and strategic goals.

Communications and Development 15%

• Provide communications content and ideas for the Advocate magazine, Board of Trustees updates, blog posts, website, social media content, and earned media.
• Collaborate with the development team to provide input on donor communications, meet with major donors as appropriate, and work with the team in seeking new funding sources.

Administrative 10%

• Manage the Legislative and Policy budget(s).
• Serve on various committees, attend and facilitate staff meetings, and participate in organizational trainings.
• Attend board meetings and staff retreats.

Desired Qualifications:

• Significant experience:
  • Drafting legislative, regulatory, or policy documents for introduction in legislative bodies and/or adoption by executive agencies.
  • Working to accomplish conservation goals through legislation, policy, and regulatory changes.
  • Initiating strategies to accomplish focused outcomes.
  • Addressing conservation and/or environmental justice issues with a team.
  • Bringing entities with different perspectives together to pursue a common goal on an ambitious timeline.
• Understanding of the legislative process and the steps required to transform a conservation vision into law or policy.
• Academic credentials and/or demonstrated knowledge of laws and policies related to public lands, tribal sovereignty, and environmental issues.
• Demonstrated organizational, planning, and follow-through skills.
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
• A demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Demonstrated ability to follow through with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work both individually and with a team from a remote location.
• Willingness to travel

Application timeline:  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Review of applications will begin on October 12, 2020 and will continue until the position has been filled. Anticipated start date: December 1, 2020.

Compensation:  $80,000 – $120,000 starting salary. The starting salary is negotiable, commensurate with experience and qualifications, and will be adjusted for location / cost of living. Salary advances are discussed with the direct supervisor of the position on a yearly basis and based on clearly outlined criteria upon hire.
