Full-Time Learning Specialist

Position Overview

The Learning Specialist works with students in grades 2-5, both directly and indirectly, and collaborates with teachers and staff to provide academic and social-emotional support for an assigned caseload of students. The Learning Specialist will facilitate and coordinate instructional support services in literacy and math for individual students and small groups, including teaching small group literacy and/or math classes. 

 

The Learning Specialist’s caseload may include the following:

  • Students who transfer into the school and require short-term intervention before joining an existing literacy or math group. 
  • Students who require additional intervention in order to participate successfully in academic classes along with the other students in their cohort.
  • Students who are shifting from one literacy or math group to another, and require short-term intervention to support concepts or skills that may have been missed. 

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach small group literacy and/or math classes to identified students in grades 2-5.
  • Work individually with students who require additional support, as described above. 
  • Differentiate and/or modify class curriculum for individual students, including coordinating with the classroom teaching team to reinforce and integrate strategies into the classroom throughout all academic subjects. 
  • Communicate and meet with classroom teachers on a regular basis.
  • Administer academic screenings and assessments as needed.
  • Communicate and meet with the Director of Lower School and members of the Program Team on a regular basis in order to meet students’ needs. 
  • Communicate with families on a regular basis to update them on student goals and progress.
  • Attend relevant lower school grade and division level meetings.
  • Complete quarterly report cards detailing student progress. 
  • Participate in family-teacher conferences three times per year to share student data and progress. 
  • Consult with teachers, parents, administration and outside professionals regarding classroom and at-home interventions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Education, Certifications, and Work Related Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience at the elementary school level
  • Experience working with children with language based learning differences such as dyslexia
  • Knowledge of multi-sensory teaching techniques in literacy and math
  • Knowledge of various assessment measures (standardized and non-standardized) and ability to interpret data to evaluate student progress and drive instruction

 

Preferred

  • Valid Teaching Credential, preferably from the State of California and in Special Education 
  • Master’s Degree in Education or Special Education 
  • Wilson Reading Systems Certification

 

Additional Skills

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with students, colleagues, and families verbally and in writing 
  • Knowledge of relevant educational technology
  • Ability to implement formal and informal assessment programs
  • Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities
