Full-Time Inspection Technician

Job Description

This position interacts with landlords, tenants, homeowners, City officials and public agencies to ensure compliance of the City’s property maintenance code and to enforce weights and measures codes in accordance with adopted regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Inspect properties following citizen complaints or through routine visits about the condition of the premises. May inspect devices at businesses for compliance with state regulations for weights and measures. 40%
• Secure code compliance through education and enforcement which may include citation preparation, issuance and legal testimony. Meet with homeowners, landlords and tenants to discuss concerns with code issues found and correction notices issued by the Code Enforcement Inspector as a result of inspection activity. Review plans and documents submitted for correcting noted code violations and issues permits. 40%
• Prepare supporting documentation and develops reports. 20%
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
• High school degree or equivalent.
• Three years of experience in building construction or inspections.
• Valid Driver’s License.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to write effective corrective orders and communications.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with industry, regulatory agencies, internal City operations and the general public.
• Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
• Ability to handle stressful situations.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to use GIS, word processing software and windows based software.
• Ability and willingness to be assertive, persistent and tactful.

In evaluating candidates for this position, the City may consider a combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Office machines and equipment, such as computer, printer, handheld inspection tools, ladder, camera, cell phone, fax machine, copy machine and Microsoft Office software suite.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described in this position description are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, kneel, squat, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger/handle objects or operate tools or controls; reach with hands or arms; climb ladders and stairs; and negotiate the terrain/obstacles on construction sites. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required of this job include close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIROMENT

The work environment characteristics described in this position description are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to noisy.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work outside in adverse weather conditions.
