Your role

The Fifth Estate is a legendary investigative current affairs program soon to embark on its 48th season informing Canadians with stories that reveal, hold to account, and lead to meaningful conversations and change in this country.

As a host at the fifth estate, you are a senior journalist with demonstrated experience finding and telling those investigative stories.

You seek to tell stories that come from an array of communities, reflecting your understanding of Canada’s complex cultural make-up. You know the country well with a knowledge of the differences that sometimes divide Canadians, wherever they live. You have strong connections and contacts in underrepresented communities and a commitment to deliver those stories to the audience of The Fifth Estate.

You bring an ability to understand and distill complex information through creative story-telling. You have the curiosity, energy and commitment needed to see an investigative story through its necessary research, and have an advanced understanding of legal requirements in journalism, in addition to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You are a multi-platform journalist who can skillfully deliver a story to any of CBC’s news programs, whether on radio, tv, online or on social media.

You come with creative ideas for growing the reach of our stories, a willingness to challenge yourself, and a desire to be a part of an iconic program to promote the value of journalism, inclusion and accountability.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Job requires a university degree or equivalent.
An informed understanding of Canada’s cultural mosaic, and a strong connection to communities currently underrepresented in Canadian journalism.
A minimum of 5 years experience as a host/reporter/correspondent, at the national network-level or in a major market.
Highly developed television on-air performance skills.
Demonstrated and exceptional television interviewing skills.
Experience in understanding and distilling complex research into scripts.
Superior understanding of domestic and world issues.
Expertise in covering a wide range of stories.
Exceptional leadership and teamwork skills.
Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback on interviews, story structure and writing.
Strong story ideas and critical thinking.
Excellent writing and research skills.
A strong understanding of social and digital media and a proven ability to use them effectively.
Ability to work calmly and collaboratively under deadline pressure.
Full knowledge of the Journalistic Standards and Practices of CBC News and an ability to make quick judgements in accordance with these guidelines.
Developed knowledge of legal requirements as they relate to investigative journalism.
French is an asset.
This job requires schedule flexibility; work may take place on evenings and weekends, and overtime is sometimes required.
