Full-Time Host, As It Happens

CBC/ Radio-Canada – Posted by anne.masson Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Job Description

Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.

Whether on-air or behind the scenes, here you join a team that thrives on making the connections and telling the stories that are important to Canadians. So, if you’ve got the ability to keep up with the pace of our ever-changing industry, the passion to make the next great idea even better and the drive to make things happen, this is the place for you.

Your role

CBC Radio is looking for a dynamic new Host for As It Happens, Canada’s flagship national evening current affairs program.

You are an insatiably curious, experienced journalist with a passion for drawing stories, accountability and humour out of interview subjects on a daily basis.

You are a well-read, strong writer with an eclectic range of interests in topics both national and global — from politics to social issues to business, culture, science and environment and everything absurd and unusual in between. As an interviewer, you are an active listener who seeks clarity and understanding, anticipating what the audience needs and wants to know.

You have an ability to be a leader in upholding and demonstrating the highest of CBC’s journalistic standards and practices on the program and within the department. You also live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

You bring curiosity but also something beyond — a demonstrated openness to diverse perspectives and ideas — as well as an understanding that using a full range of tones, including humour, is key to strong radio current affairs programming. You are enthusiastic about experimenting with talk formats, including taking risks with innovative treatments of topics.

You are a broadcaster who is comfortable showing your personality on the air. Our audience expects it.

You relish dashing into the studio to get the voice at the heart of the story that has to be recorded now…even with just a few minutes notice.

You’re not fazed by the idea of 7 interviews a day, five days a week.

You are a co-host who can build chemistry with your on air partner.

You work well with a team under daily pressure… you inspire others to go above and beyond with you, to call 6 guests before they find the right voice.

You are equally comfortable in taped and live formats and can react to breaking news, changing events and remaking the program as needed.

You will play a key role in helping us connect with, and grow, new audiences through the range of stories and perspectives presented on the program, as well as through regular outreach and public events across the country.

You are familiar with all digital forms of storytelling, including podcasting, and you fully embrace social and digital media.

Key Tasks:
Conduct multiple daily interviews.
Write, collaborate on and perform scripts.
Perform a variety of tasks associated with the preparation and on-air presentation of program material on radio and digital.
Conceive of original stories and concepts and work collaboratively to produce them.
Moderate and participate in public events, representing As It Happens and CBC Radio.

Qualifications:
University degree or equivalent.
5 – 10 years of experience in journalism, reporting and/or hosting.
Competencies:

Engaging, curious, spontaneous and intellectually challenging on-air and online personality.
Wide range of genuine interests, knowledge and insight, reflecting curiosity in many current affairs topics, and an ability to make them relevant to existing and new audiences.
Widely-read, knowledgeable and nuanced thinker.
Strong writer.
Exemplary journalistic skills, demonstrated through interviewing critical thinking and innovative storytelling.
Openness to diverse perspectives and ideas, and differing points of view, is critical.
Embraces leadership role and provides ongoing constructive feedback to team.
Technical skills, including field recording and audio editing, are an asset.
Knowledge of and creative ideas around the use of social media and digital platforms to connect with and grow audiences.
Demonstrably engaged, interested and immersed in a wide range of diverse experiences.
Strong knowledge and understanding of, and/or connection to underrepresented communities across Canada is key.
Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Ability to function independently and cooperatively in a small team setting.
Ability to work effectively under deadline pressure.
Ability to build relationships and contacts inside and outside the CBC.
Genuinely loves public outreach and is an enthusiastic ambassador of public broadcasting and the program.
Broad knowledge of the country and the world with past experience living and traveling in different parts of Canada and abroad is considered an asset.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
